  • Full time, 40 hours per week
  • In–the-office location is 450 Columbus Blvd in Hartford, CT
  • This hybrid role has the opportunity for telework in accordance with the telework policy.
THE ROLE: The CT Paid Leave program is funded through payroll deductions (referred to as contributions) that are remitted to the Authority by employers quarterly. The Accounting Careers Trainee will report to and work closely with the Contribution and Compliance Manager. Under the direction of the Contribution and Compliance Manager, this individual will work with Authority staff, vendor partners, and other state agencies to support the contribution collection system ensuring the ongoing solvency of the program

The Trainee program will introduce the candidate to working in a dynamic, collaborative, and mission-focused environment. The trainee will gain experience in reconciliation and auditing various payroll records ensuring compliance with statutory obligations

ABOUT US: The CT Paid Leave Authority is a quasi–public state agency which administers Connecticut’s Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program, providing Connecticut workers access to income replacement benefits when out of work for life events covered under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, the Connecticut Family and Medical Leave Act and the Connecticut Family Violence Leave Act

The Authority’s mission is to help Connecticut’s workforce navigate health challenges and life changes with greater financial security by making benefit payments to eligible workers who need to take leave from work to care for themselves or a family member

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.


  • Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position;
  • Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period;
  • Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles;
  • May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates;
  • Performs related duties as required.


  • Knowledge of
    • accounting and auditing principles and practices;
    • business mathematics and statistics;
    • business uses of information technology;
    • effective report writing;
  • Ability to
    • read and understand written materials;
    • utilize computer software.


Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program


  • Experience using mathematical and analytical skills to reconcile accounts or identify discrepancies
  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, public administration, or a closely related field
  • Experience or coursework involving audits and risk principles
  • Experience or coursework in reading, analyzing and evaluating information in order to reach a conclusion
  • Experience or coursework in writing a financial report
  • Experience or coursework where teamwork and collaboration were necessary
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel including creating and developing spreadsheets, using macros, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and importing and exporting data
  • Experience working remotely
