Summary:


The Manager OR Sterile Processing reports to the Administrative Director Surgical Services.The Manager OR Sterile Processing manages sterilization and reprocessing activities for surgical and sterile services. Assists Materials Management to ensure the appropriate type and amount of supplies to provide service to the Operating Room and SPD are maintained. Ensures adherence to standards established by OSHA FDA AORN TJC and AAMI (Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation).Supports and interprets the philosophy and objectives of Rhode Island Hospital and the department of Patient Services to staff patients and families.


Responsibilities:


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

Directs processing activities for Surgical Services to ensure all necessary equipment instruments and supplies are available to meet anticipated needs related to inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures.

Develops short term and long term goals that are in alignment with hospital�s and department�s strategic objectives.Develops SPD capital budget (operational expense including supplies equipment and labor) which reflects anticipated expenditures/resources to meet initiatives and flexible staffing based on volume.Reviews budgeted recommendations with Administrative Director for approval.Analyzes resolves and reports variances between budgeted and actual supply and expense lines monthly monitoring fluctuations in volume.

Interviews selects trains and assigns work to employees; evaluates employee performance and recommends salary adjustments.Counsels employees and performs corrective action up to and including termination.Resolves employee related issues and concerns as they arise.Ensures annual development plan for each employee is established.Provides direction on departmental educational plan providing feedback as needed and sets an example by being a role model for department staff.

Ensures staff is appropriately trained in principles of aseptic technique sterilization disinfections instrument recognition and tray assembly ensuring adherence to established standards policies and procedures.

Ensures routine maintenance is performed on washer- disinfectors steam and low temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilizers and cart washer (including education and review of function and operation with employees of sterile processing).

Monitors stability of work force as indicated by turnover rate staff feedback and exit interviews.Facilitates the completion of time schedules according to written guidelines.Apprises supervisors and staff of potential shift problems.Reviews employee attendance on an ongoing basis.Analyzes trends and identifies problems.Initiates corrective measures to reduce absenteeism and tardiness.Monitors work flow and quality of service provided to customers.

Prepares clear well-organized complete and timely written communications.Interacts on all shifts with unit personnel.Attends meetings and facilitates staff attendance at hospital required committees.Provides mechanism for staff representation to report back to unit.Participates actively in leadership council and OR Management Committees.Disseminates information to staff.Uses verbal communication which is clear concise and timely.Is an effective listener demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and provides feedback in a timely manner.

Collaborates with area based quality representatives to establish area based indicators and monitors monthly.Reports findings to the Administrative Director and recommends plan of action. Develops implements and monitors adherence to quality standards the guidelines of the department�s philosophy and staff goals.

Addresses concerns regarding instrumentation equipment and case cart supplies with clinical and non-clinical departments to insure resolution of problem.Communicates with customers to maintain and enhance relationships to improve services and to maintain an understanding of clinical operations and related issues.

Coordinates ordering of instrumentation for preference card requirement with SPD supervisory staff and clinical managers.Works with vendors to ensure that instrumentation is current and trade-outs with new technology are accomplished.

Actively participates in professional organizations and continuing education programs as needed and supports the educational standards of the hospital department and field.

Participates in or leads various teams as appropriate.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

A Bachelor�s Degree in Business Administration Nursing or -4 to 6 years of experience in lieu of education in Sterile Processing management or related field is required

Certification as a CRCST or CSPDT prior to hiring and at the managerial level a CHL or CSPM is required within one year from an accredited organization such as IAHCSMM (International Association of Health Care Central Service Materiel Management) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).

Extensive knowledge of steam and gas plasma sterilizers and surgical instruments is required. Should possess strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and Excel.

EXPERIENCE:

Five years progressive experience in sterile processing reflecting understanding of operating room and sterile processing activities and related materials management functions.

Experience should demonstrate effective leadership and management skills.

Previous sterile processing management experience in a similarly complex healthcare environment required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Works in sterile processing and operating room environment.

Some exposure to contaminated equipment supplies and instruments may occasionally occur.

Such hazards are minimized when established safety procedures are followed.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within the department�s policies and procedures. Refers specific complex problems to the Administrative Director when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.

SUPERVISION:

Supervisory responsibility for OR Reprocessing Assistants (32 FTEs) OR Sterile Processing Coordinator (2) OR Sterile Processing Supervisors (2) and Supervisor OR Sterile Processing/Liaison Services
