POSITION

Under general supervision, enforces Municipal Code regulations, including Health & Safety, Sanitation, Tax & Business License, Building Safety, Housing Codes, and Regulations. The below list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY . Incumbents in this class may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent, AND two (2) years’ experience enforcing municipal zoning codes, performing field inspections, and documenting findings. Other characteristics include but are not limited to:

TASKS

  • Inspects commercial and residential properties for code violations;
  • Writes and issues warning notices, parking citations, and notices to appear in court for violations of regulations;
  • Explains and interprets ordinances to the public and other interested parties;
  • Performs office and field follow-ups on notices/citations;
  • Prepares criminal complaints about filing and serves inspection warrants for property inspections;
  • Responds to complaints and inquiries and patrols assigned areas;
  • Assists in prosecuting cases involving violations and appears in court as a witness to give testimony;
  • Communicate with traffic enforcement and other departments to reduce abandoned vehicles and other violations.

Knowledge, Skills, And Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal Housing, Zoning, and Health & Safety Codes and regulations, methods, policies, and procedures for issuing notices and parking citations, documentation, report, and file management techniques,
  • Skilled in interpreting ordinances and regulations, providing and following oral and written communications, and establishing and maintaining productive working relationships;
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports using proper grammar (English), perform essential duties with minimum supervision, use effective conflict management methods, and accurately inspect properties and identify violations.
  • Proficient in using work-related computer applications, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, the internet, and other electronic devices to perform essential job duties. Proficiency in a second language, such as Spanish, is desirable.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Work may require frequent standing, walking, and bending. Incumbents may be exposed to repetitive motion, vision to monitor, extreme temperatures and weather, moving traffic, unsafe building and construction sites, hazardous chemicals, airborne exhausts, and fumes.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process.

The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
