Summary

The Chemical Genetics group in Cambridge, MA, is seeking a highly motivated, curious, and innovative scientist to boost our endeavor in the discovery, development, and characterization of small molecules affecting defined phenotypes with the goal of uncovering and validating novel therapeutics and drug targets. We are a highly collaborative and global group of chemists and biologists dynamically exploring the interface of chemistry and biology in initiating, leading, and progressing team-oriented projects in early drug discovery. This group is part of the larger Discovery Sciences (DSc) department that encompasses the full-spectrum of sophisticated capabilities needed to succeed in a state-of-the-art drug discovery biopharma laboratory. This position will collaborate closely with research teams within DSc, as well as across diverse Disease Areas.

About the Role

Internal Job Title – Research Scientist I/II

Position Location: Cambridge, MA, onsite

Your key responsibilities:

  • Applying your chemistry expertise to prosecute on hits from phenotypic screens
  • Perform lab based research using organic synthesis experiments and purification procedures, and standard organic chemistry laboratory techniques or new methods from the literature to obtain pure characterized compounds for biological evaluation.
  • Interpret activity data from cell-based assays to establish SAR and develop probe molecules for target identification and mechanism of action studies
  • Work in interdisciplinary teams to share expertise and collaborate toward shared goals
  • Frequent oral data communication/presentation

Essential requirements:

  • A recent B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemistry with 0-3 years’ experience in the design, synthesis and characterization of organic compounds for testing in biological systems. This is not a PhD-level position.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of modern organic synthetic methods; medicinal chemistry, chemical biology knowledge is a plus
  • Experience with common spectroscopy (NMR, IR, UV, MS), analytical techniques and chromatography purification systems is required
  • The candidate will work in multi-disciplinary cross-functional teams where good communication skills are necessary
  • A naturally collaborative style for effective drug discovery team participation
  • Curiosity, creativity, scientific agility, and interest in small molecule design, synthesis and optimization, including exploration of structure activity relationships.
