Position Description:
The University of Louisville REACH Math Resources is seeking an Academic Support Specialist I. The position is responsible for teaching an estimated eight sections of GEN 103/104 per academic year and serves as an academic coach for underprepared students. Assists with the management and support of the GEN 103/104 classrooms (Emporium Math Lab, Mobile Laptop classroom, and other locations) and the supervision of the graduate and undergraduate student employees working in the classrooms. Assists with the data collection of courses, programs, and services related to REACH Math Resources for annual reports. Serves as a substitute instructor or tutor where necessary in the classroom during all hours of operation. Assists with the general planning and operations of services for REACH Math Resources and the implementation of summer bridge programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists with the instruction of the college readiness course, Special Topics in College Mathematics (GEN 103/104). Teaches an estimated eight sections of GEN 103/104 per academic year. Conducts class sessions, tracks student attendance, supervises tutors working with students during these sessions, reviews individual students' testing and progress records. May conduct individual conferences and/or communicate with students outside of scheduled class times to enhance their academic behaviors and success. Assists with the management and support for the REACH classroom, including helping with interviews, training, supervising, and evaluating graduate and undergraduate student employees. Helps the GEN 103/104 coordinator with staffing the classroom and serves as a tutor when necessary. Assists with developing and revising course materials. Assists with data collection for statistical reports demonstrating the effectiveness of the GEN 103 and GEN 104 courses. Provides support for all MRC summer bridge programs and assists in planning, instruction, and operations of these programs in mathematics conducted by REACH. Attends GEN 103/104 weekly staff meetings and Instructional Team meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience with college-age students
- Knowledge of/experience using mathematics software used in college or high school settings
- Proficient in MS Office
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
- 1 year of related work experience: teaching mathematics in college or in secondary education (high school), tutoring mathematics in college or high school, and/or instructional work in teaching/tutoring mathematics to college-age or pre-college age students (e.g., summer bridge programs or college preparatory programs).
