The University of Louisville is seeking a Research Program Manager III in the School of Public Health. The position is a Research Manager for the five-year NOURISH research project in the Humana Center for Community Health Research, funded by the Humana Foundation. This community-based healthy eating research project will focus on both urban and rural environments to identify commonalities and differences in community preferences and implementation for project goals.
The Research Manager will collaborate with local community advisory boards in each community to adapt and implement evidence-based multilevel interventions in the target neighborhoods to augment community capacity for disease prevention and health promotion and to enhance fidelity, acceptability, and sustainability of program goals. The Research Manager will have responsibilities for monitoring projects in urban environments, such as Louisville, and rural environments.
This role requires a fundamental understanding of and experience with the research process, as well as its role in the community and in addressing healthy eating to promote food security, thereby supporting lifelong health and well-being. The incumbent in this role will manage a specific research portfolio led by faculty in the School of Public Health and Information Sciences and will supervise graduate research assistants. The Research Manager will also be responsible for the creation and maintenance of data management systems.
The research will focus on community health, specifically regarding advancing public health science through the integration of systems science into public health research methods and measures. The research in this portfolio includes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method data and analysis. This role requires a fundamental understanding of and experience with data handling, data compliance, data security, and data quality for different types of data, rather than purely quantitative (e.g., interview data, observation data, community-level data).
The incumbent will create data management systems and protocols, assist with grant proposals and IRB submissions, and receive and manage data from multiple projects. The person will be responsible for working with investigators to plan their data collection and select measures, maintain data security in compliance with IRB policies and federal regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA), support research team members in preparing data for analysis, and extract data to provide reports for the overall portfolio.
In addition, the person will be responsible for synthesizing literature, participating in publication submissions, engaging with partners from communities, multiple disciplines, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies, conducting data analysis, and disseminating results for multiple audiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage Humana Center for Community Health NOURISH research project in the UofL School of Public Health & Information Sciences.
- Provide overall leadership including for day-to-day operations including fiscal management.
- Participate in the integration of systems science methods, including community-based system dynamics, into each of the research projects in the portfolio.
- Supervise graduate assistants.
- Identify funding and collaboration opportunities aligned with the research portfolio.
- Develop data management systems, processes, and protocols to be shared across research projects.
- Develop grant IRB protocols as it relates to data management and security.
- Provide accountability to researchers for following established data management processes.
- Implement procedures related to the secure and efficient handling and sharing of data.
- Ensure compliance with IRB and federal data security and confidentiality regulations.
- Troubleshoot data and data management-related problems.
- Support research teams in the analysis and interpretation of multiple types of data.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD or PhD in progress within the field of public health or a related social science field.
- Experience working on community health issues in the rural and urban Kentucky.
- Experience managing projects, including development of logic models, standard operating procedures, grant writing, and research processes.
- Experience combining and triangulating research data sets.
- Experience with Institutional Review Board processes and requirements.
- Knowledge and experience in systems science methods, including community-based system dynamics.
- Experience managing and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data.
- At least 4 years of work experience specifically focused on community health research.
- Demonstrable experience working with diverse communities.
- Ability to travel to various locations throughout the Louisville community and to in-state or out-of-state conferences.
