The Fleet Maintenance Foreman leads the daily operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of the City’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This position performs advanced-level mechanical work on gasoline and diesel-powered equipment while also overseeing shop activities and providing technical support to mechanics.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers, internal external customers, community members, and the public at large.
  • Maintain a positive and productive environment ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the City, Department and Division.
  • Perform master’s level work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Lead work in the shop, including operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of all fleet vehicles and equipment; provide technical assistance to mechanics as needed.
  • Investigate customer service requests and perform preventative maintenance and emergency repairs.
  • Maintain records and generate reports concerning vehicle and equipment maintenance, operations, programs, and activities.
  • Maintain equipment and supply inventory records related to receipt and issuance of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Participate in the review and evaluation of subordinate employees.
  • Make recommendations regarding budget, maintenance, and capital plans.
  • Maintain crew safety, conduct safety training meetings, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Operate equipment including front-end loader, skid loader, load-all, crane truck, jet truck, jet trailer, sewer camera, forklift, and dump trucks.
  • Implement safe handling of chemicals, oils, degreasers, solvents, fuels, sprays, and liquids.
  • Troubleshoot vehicle systems in order to determine the cause, extent, and level of service required.
  • Respond to winter storm operations on a 24-hour call basis as required; repair vehicles and equipment, and plow snow and spread salt as needed to clear streets.
  • Perform the job safely and in compliance with safety policies and procedures.

Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a full-service fleet facility is required.
  • ASE Master Certified in either auto/light truck or medium/heavy duty truck is required.
    • A technical degree in diesel technology, business management, or a related field is desired.
  • Valid Class A CDL with airbrake and tanker endorsements within 120 days of employment required.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license upon hire.
  • Certification Chemical Spill Response is refreshed at least annually
