General Purpose

To interpret and translate complex medical information to patients who speak a foreign language. To ensure the complete understanding of medical information between medical staff and patients. To translate a wide range of medical information that includes medical conditions, treatment options, follow-up appointment details, billing, and insurance. They also accompany patients during office visits and provide information

Essential Duties/Position Responsibilities

  • Fluency in a foreign language – medical interpreters need to be fluent in at least two foreign languages that is frequently spoken by patients that visit Strides for refugee screenings and other medical services.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology – an up-to-date knowledge of medical terminology and procedures is essential to communicate with doctors, nurses, and medical staff, and to relay that information correctly to the patient
  • Translation – translation skills are important for a medical interpreter to accurately transfer tone, style, and cultural elements of information from one language to another
  • Interpersonal skills – good interpersonal skills are a prerequisite for this job, as medical interpreters need to connect to and interact with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • Communication skills – medical interpreters must be good at listening, speaking in a clear and respectful manner, and interpreting nonverbal communication and body language
  • Phone etiquette – phone calls are often a large part of the medical communication process, and medical interpreters need excellent telephone etiquette to do their jobs effectively
  • Attends all staff meetings and all other meetings as assigned.

Education And Experience

  • National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters Certification
  • Minimum of 3 years of interpretation in medical field. Background in medical services.

Skills & Expertise

  • Have a demonstrated ability to work effectively.
  • Poses certification for medical interpretation.
  • Ability to interact positively and build rapport with co-workers, patients, and external contacts.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information ethically and responsibly.
  • Ability to protect the confidentiality of patient, employee and business information.

Working Environment And Physical Activities

The role requires the ability to sit, stand, and bend for extended periods. The position may involve mental tasks such as comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, communicating, instructing, and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills. While the physical demands do not require lifting or moving heavy objects, the role may involve occasional handling and feeling tasks. The position also requires near visual acuity and the ability to communicate effectively through talking and hearing

Work Schedule

Mon- Sat, hours can vary

We offer a competitive hourly range of $22.00 - $28.00 depending on your experience.

This range reflects STRIDE’s good faith estimate of potential compensation at the time of posting. The final salary for the selected candidate will be determined based on several factors, including experience, education, budget, internal equity, specialty, and training.
