Motor Vehicle Operator

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Regularly drives a variety of motor vehicles including automobiles, buses, and trucks to transport people, materials, and equipment.
• Posts manifests and other records to document the safe delivery of goods and people.

Classification Criteria and Distinguishing Characteristics:

• Driving skills required, indicated by possession of a General Class D New York State driver’s license.
• Full-time position with possibilities of overtime.

Typical Activities, Tasks, and Assignments:

• Drives motor vehicles both on and off State property.
• Monitors gauges and checks fluid levels and tire pressures.
• Performs basic maintenance including changing oil, spark plugs, tires, and windshield washers.
• Keeps vehicle records and inspects vehicles, noting defects and repairs needed.
• Knowledge of Vehicle and Traffic Law, nature of cargo and special handling requirements.
• Ability to lift and carry cargo onto and off transport vehicles.

Relationships with Others:

• May work alone or with others, requiring frequent exchanges with passengers to ensure a safe trip.

Job Requirements:

• Knowledge of Vehicle and Traffic Law and basic vehicle maintenance.
• Ability to operate vehicles as required and carry cargo.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type.
