JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Principal (AP) reports to the Regional Superintendent and works with the Principal on a daily basis for direction and support. The AP is accountable for helping with the day to day coordination of Independent Study operations, site based classrooms, and jail programming. This position will provide instructional leadership to the Five Keys teachers and staff. Additionally, they will provide support to Five Keys partners. This role will assist with curriculum development, student tracking systems, along with student behavior management and intervention.
We are looking for someone who insists on maintaining a positive attitude and enjoys supporting a diverse group of people. This job is for you if you are a self-driven, results oriented person with clear focus and attention to detail. Strong general and emotional intelligence coupled with the capability to work efficiently and independently, to prioritize, and to communicate clearly and succinctly in writing and in person are essential. Experience with standardized educational assessments and knowledge of how to interpret assessment results are essential, as is an understanding of how educational barriers affect work and training.
This position supports multiple sites, in-custody and community, in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Principal and Superintendent, and provide weekly updates
- Provide direct supervision and evaluation to designated teachers who are working in learning centers, this may include workforce and in custody site locations
- Oversee and ensure compliance of all independent study and whole group instruction regulations
- Evaluate student progress in the instructional program and maintaining permanent files and work progress reports
- Ensure Special Education laws and requirements are being met and students identified and served
- Participate as part of the Response to Intervention team
- Provide activities which facilitate the professional growth and development of the school staff and enhance the quality of the instructional program in person and virtually
- Provide organizational leadership regarding creation, development and maintenance of connections for Five Keys students, including liaising with city and community partners to develop vocational continuums of care for students
- Implement, or facilitate the implementation of, standardized reading and math assessments and tests at assigned locations (including CASAS, high school equivalency)
- Work closely with the College Services Coordinator to develop curriculum and support the implementation of a college dorm for in-custody students
- Support teachers with GED curriculum and strategies and serve as a GED proctor, when needed
- Conceptualize the broad goals of the school and plans accordingly to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to support the success of the total school program
- Monitor and facilitate the aggregation of academic gains and other information for students placed in school and skills training for external contracts
- Help maintain student tracking/outcomes documents
- Plan and implement a program of study following state and school goals/curriculum that meet the individual needs and development of students
- Assist with the development and implementation of Five Keys college or career curriculum that aligns with successful matriculation to college
- Encourage teachers to set and maintain appropriate standards of behavior in their classroom
- Respond to student requests and meet with students needing interventions, in collaboration with teachers and principals
- Track and re-engage students released to the community
- Refer students to partners that provide re-entry services, e.g. substance use disorder treatment, housing, and employment
- Audit Work Progress Reports (WPR) on a monthly basis and communicate findings to the principal
- Communicate and collaborate with student service staff and managers
- Maintain accurate, complete and confidential records as required by law, administrative regulations and school policy
- As a central part of the school administration, be available for periodic school-wide tasks such as assessment proctoring, graduation and event planning, emergency class coverage and staff training
- Ensure that security policies and measures are consistently implemented and adhered to
- Maintain relationships with community organizations to increase effectiveness of student referrals, e.g. community college, employment, housing, and substance use disorder services
- Provide partners with any requested data and documentation related to student outcomes
- Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of how to teach to California state and Common Core standards
- Knowledge of general learning theories and curriculum development
- Knowledge of how to educate students who have been determined to be at risk of not graduating high school
- Knowledge of and proficiency in effective methodology and techniques used to instill confidence and self-respect in adult students
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, and databases
- Able to maintain strict confidentiality and take all precautions when handling sensitive information
- Possession of a current, valid, verifiable California Commission on Teaching Credentialing certificate or permit for core classes, strongly recommended
- Administrative Services Credential preferred
- 3-5 years of classroom teaching
- Proven track record of success in completing administrative tasks
- Experience successfully working with justice involved populations
- Must wear provided PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and adhere to all safety guidelines and requirements, when needed
- Frequent talking and hearing conversations
- Long periods of walking, sitting at a desk and/or computer station
- Lifting items that weigh up to 25 lbs.; reaching, bending, carrying and stooping within the daily routine of tasks and activities
This position is contingent upon:
- Satisfactory results of a Live Scan (criminal background investigation)
- Successfully obtaining jail clearance for positions working in county jails or probation locations
- Submitting proof of clear TB results. Results dated within 60 days prior to hire date are acceptable
- Moderate to high noise level
- Work environment varies from site to site
- Some personal safety risk working in underserved communities
- Must be willing and able to work in a correctional facility, travel throughout the area to community sites, and travel state-wide to various locations or meetings as needed
