General Definition of Work

The lifeguard at Metro School, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion protects the health, safety, and welfare of the students and staff while in the pool and on the pool deck. Employee performs school-based work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Enforce facility policies, rules, and regulations
  • Coordinate with adapted physical education (APE) teacher to understand needs of students, and understand lesson objectives and goals
  • Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies
  • Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report unsafe conditions or nonfunctioning equipment to administration
  • Complete records and reports regarding water chemistry, incidents, and accidents
  • Complete opening and closing duties of the facility
  • Perform aquatic facility maintenance as assigned
  • Monitor aquatic facility during special events or after-hour activities as requested
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of swimming pool safety
  • Thorough knowledge of swimming pool safety equipment and the chemicals used to maintain safe levels in swimming pools
  • Advanced skills in swimming, strength and stamina
  • Ability to perform functions of rescue and emergency care as outlined by the American Red Cross Lifeguard training, including first aid and CPR
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools or equipment
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement

Education and Experience

  • High school degree or GED required
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a lifeguard required
  • Previous experience with students with disabilities preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid required
  • Current CPR (American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuer) required
  • Current First Aid (American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety) required
  • Current Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Training required
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
