The Opportunity
The Family Peer Advocate will provide client-centered services to assist families across Long Island with children ages 5-21 years old diagnosed with or at risk of behavioral health concerns. The Advocate will build individualized partnerships with families, leveraging their strengths to enhance their capacity to care for their child. Using personal experience, the Family Peer Advocate helps parents and caregivers navigate services to support their child's success in managing emotional and behavioral challenges. The primary focus is to engage, support, and empower families, helping them regain control over their lives and recovery while serving as a role model throughout the treatment process
Responsibilities
The Family Peer Advocate will provide client-centered services to assist families across Long Island with children ages 5-21 years old diagnosed with or at risk of behavioral health concerns. Using personal experience, the Family Peer Advocate helps parents and caregivers navigate services to support their child's success in managing emotional and behavioral challenges. The primary focus is to engage, support, and empower families, helping them regain control over their lives and recovery while serving as a role model throughout the treatment process
Responsibilities
- Provide services to individuals and their families/caregiver in the office and in the community using motivational interviewing techniques and active listening.
- Assist families in developing parenting skills and securing community resources through advocacy and navigation support.
- Attend required trainings, meetings, and supervision.
- Complete necessary paperwork and maintain accurate progress notes in the electronic health record system.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to plan family engagement workshops and participate in case conferences to address treatment goals.
- Help clients create crisis management plans and identify natural supports.
- Educate patients on their rights and teach advocacy skills within mental health systems.
- High school diploma or equivalent required, college degree preferred.
- Must Obtain provisional certification within the first 6 months of employment and the professional credential within 18 months or apply for an extension if more time is needed.
- Must have 'lived-experience' as the parent or primary caregiver of a child/youth with a social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, substance use disorder or developmental disability.
- Must demonstrate a knowledge of community resources, mental health diagnoses/symptoms and suicide prevention/ assessment.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Valid and clean New York State Driver's License

- Salary: 22-26/Hour
- Schedule: (M-F), evening and weekend hours, as needed
- This role is full-time (35 hours/week), nonexempt
