Overview
This position exists as an armed officer serving to protect life and property at Belmont University, to preserve order and maintain the peace, to prevent and detect crime, and to provide mechanisms for responding to requests for service, incidents, and emergency situations. The position of corporal provides role-model performance and serves as a coach, mentor, trainer and first-line leader for officers. This position is eligible to receive a shift differential.
Responsibilities
- Perform all duties of security officer I and II including community engagement, exceptional service, high visibility pro-active patrol, responding to calls, managing critical incidents, and providing security education and awareness programming.
- Serve as a role model, mentor, and first-line leader; display exemplary performance in appearance, professionalism, courteousness, engaging the campus community, officer safety practices, and building relationships with students and both internal and external partners.
- Serve as a Field Training Officer (FTO) for Officers in Training (OITs) to ensure they are properly proficient in patrol duties, that training progress and competency has been fully documented and reviewed with the (OIT), and that all requisite training has been successfully completed.
- Take on additional duties and responsibilities developing and presenting on in-service topics. May be assigned to obtain instructor certification in topics such as communication, de-escalation, crisis intervention, qpr, first aid / cpr, defensive tactics, or firearms.
- Take on additional duties and responsibilities regarding engagement. Develops and facilitates security-related programs and community policing initiatives for the campus community.
- Take on additional duties and responsibilities in functional areas of responsibility. Serve as lead on projects such as conducting hazard vulnerability assessments, event planning, mental health officer, traffic/pedestrian safety, and competencies / compliance / policy development.
- Serve in a supervisory role for events or as acting shift supervisor making decisions on the department's or the institution's behalf in managing critical incidents. Takes on additional duties and responsibilities in managing incidents at a higher level; may serve as general staff or command staff representative in an expanded Incident Command or EOC.

Requirements
- Must be able to be certified as an armed Security Guard by the state of Tennessee. Requirements found at: http://www.tn.gov/regboards/pps/asgoReqs.shtml /usgoReqs.html
- High school diploma; Associate or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or law enforcement preferred
- Certified Field Training Officer
- 1-3 years of experience in campus security or policing focused on service and engagement
- Be at least 21 years of age for registration as an unarmed security guard
- Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien
- Be legally mentally competent, be of good moral character
- Be free of habitual drunkenness or narcotics addiction or dependence
- Have no disability which would prevent performance of duties
- Be free of convictions and probation for 5 years for serious crimes OR Crimes involving firearms, shoplifting and violence.
- Must meet the state regulated training requirements
- Submit three fingerprint cards for processing for a TBI and or FBI criminal history check

- Must be trained in, or have the ability to complete training in, critical incident management including the Incident Command System, the National Incident Management System, and the IPMBA Bicycle Certification Program.
- Additional requirements include self-restraint in challenging situations, excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate observations and explain actions, and to write clear and concise reports, as well as make presentations to campus groups; good listening skills; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to relate to and gain the confidence and cooperation of the university community; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of people and act calmly and rationally in an emergency; ability to work with minimal supervision, handle multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality; ability to operate computer equipment and a two-way radio.
