Job Summary

The Surgical Support Technician assists in maintaining the surgical environment, ensuring the availability and proper functioning of instruments, equipment, and supplies in the operating room. Under the supervision of the Surgical Services Director or Charge Nurse, the technician supports the surgical team by performing duties related to aseptic technique, room turnover, patient transport, and sterile processing in accordance with infection control protocols and hospital standards.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with room turnover and ensures surgical suites are stocked, cleaned, and prepared for procedures
  • Sets up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies according to surgical procedures
  • Transports patients to and from the operating room, ensuring safety and comfort
  • Assists in the decontamination, sterilization, and assembly of surgical instruments
  • Monitors and maintains sterile field and surgical area according to infection control standards
  • Handles and processes specimens for delivery to the laboratory
  • Collaborates with surgical team members to ensure accurate instrument counts and prevent retained surgical items
  • Identifies and reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel
  • Participates in staff training, in-services, and ongoing competency assessments
  • Provides assistance during emergency situations, maintaining composure and adhering to protocols

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterile processing, and infection control principles
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced surgical environment
  • Proficient in basic computer operations and EMR systems
  • Ability to lift and transport surgical equipment and assist with patient transfers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with staff and patients
  • Demonstrates professionalism, dependability, and a commitment to patient safety

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of a Central Service Technician course or equivalent training preferred

License/Certification

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification as required by facility policy

Experience

  • Six (6) months of experience in a hospital setting, preferably in Surgery or Sterile Processing preferred
