Dairy Maintenance Mechanic

Summary Of Position

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to support our small ice cream manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate will have experience in ammonia refrigeration, general equipment maintenance, and food production environments. This position is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of production machinery, facility infrastructure, and grounds while maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Accountabilities

Equipment & Facility Maintenance:

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on ammonia refrigeration systems, production equipment, and facility infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Maintain and service boilers, air compressors, pumps, motors, and conveyors as needed.
  • Ensure food production equipment operates efficiently and complies with sanitation and safety standards.
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify potential issues and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Facility & Grounds Maintenance

  • Maintain buildings, grounds, and facility infrastructure, including lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Perform general building repairs and upkeep, including painting, minor carpentry, and plumbing fixes.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Inventory & Purchasing

  • Manage parts and components inventory, ensuring critical spares are available when needed.
  • Coordinate purchasing of replacement parts, tools, and supplies while maintaining cost efficiency.
  • Work with vendors and suppliers to source high-quality parts and materials.

Compliance & Safety

  • Maintain compliance with Risk Management Plan (RMP) for ammonia refrigeration and other facility operations.
  • Follow OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory guidelines related to industrial maintenance and food production safety.
  • Keep maintenance records up to date using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or other digital tools.
  • Participate in safety training and ensure all maintenance activities follow proper protocols.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in a cold environment (freezers and chilled rooms).
  • Requires lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • 2+ years of experience in maintenance within a food manufacturing or industrial setting preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with ammonia refrigeration systems (certifications highly desirable).
  • Working knowledge of boilers, air compressors, hydraulics, and pneumatics is a plus.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in electrical, mechanical, and automated systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Experience with RMP compliance is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Team-oriented mindset with excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Basic computer literacy, including experience with maintenance tracking software.
