Position Summary

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the oversight of the maintenance team and management of the maintenance activities for the Preparation, Dehydration, Milling, Warehouse, and general facilities at the Gilroy, CA location, which is a Union facility. The functional responsibilities include creating safe work practices, preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance, condition-based maintenance and communicating with the other departments to assure proper support. This position will directly manage and oversee the work of the Maintenance Mechanics, Plant Electricians, Knife Sharpeners and Storeroom Clerk. The Maintenance Manager will have daily interaction with all departments throughout the organization. In addition, this position has the responsibilities for leading the operations of the equipment Preventative Maintenance Service (PMs), maintaining schedules, quality of work, planning task assignments, training, employee selection, and development including progressive discipline. The position will create detailed execution plans for maintenance and implement the plans within the maintenance budgets. The Maintenance Manager will also provide technical support and oversight to the Dehydration Leads both in season and throughout down-season over-haul activities.

The ideal candidate should be cost-conscious and able to critically analyze new and existing designs to generate cost reductions. This position should be able to develop innovative and practical design solutions to technical problems. Further, they should work well leading a team and be approachable. The ability to communicate effectively, engage and motivate the team will be required for success in this position.

Position Responsibilities

  • Oversee maintenance execution for the entire facility which is a Union facility.
  • Keeping employee safety and food safety as the top priority in all activities right from planning to execution.
  • Plan and direct the maintenance function to attain optimum utilization of machinery, materials, and labor, and to achieve optimum capacity, yields and overall cost reduction.
  • Schedule and plan predictive, preventative and breakdown maintenance jobs through various check lists and Root Cause Analysis/Cause Analysis (RCA/CA) under Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).
  • Oversee and direct maintenance and knife shop employees. Responsible to motivate, provide feedback, set schedules, plan trainings, and develop the overall team.
  • Direct off-season equipment maintenance troubleshooting, repairs, overhauls, and other maintenance activities to meet in-season requirements.
  • Control maintenance costs to meet and/or better budgets by monitoring expenditure and implement systems to keep costs under control.
  • Implement computer-based maintenance management system, Maintenance Module in SAP or other CMMS systems.
  • Review quotes from contractors and prepare cost estimates for plant overhaul and upgrades.
  • Participate in internal and external customer/contractor meetings to resolve maintenance issues.
  • Assist with Operational Excellence, to include Value Stream Analysis (VSA) activities, and creation of One Point Lessons (OPL) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on a regular basis to improve the line/plant efficiency and skill of the permanent and casual operators.
  • Study current machines, utility designs, and layout to find and implement maintenance improvements eventually leading to improvement in processing in areas related to throughput, yield, spillage control etc.
  • Work with the operations team to develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives through various improvement projects.
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with Regulatory/Statutory regulations.
  • Conduct tests/trials of installed machinery to support and improve production performance.
  • Implement policies, procedures, and systems for maintenance management as defined by Company Guidelines.
  • Responsibility for managing and controlling the storeroom activities, including spare parts inventory.
  • Establish maintenance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), benchmark against best in class to validate performance and improvements in maintenance practices.
  • Develop and deliver operations and technical training in maintenance of critical machines and equipment.
    • Provide technical support, instruction and training to dehydration leads during both the processing season and during off-season activities.
    • Develop, prioritize, and lead the execution of capital project implementations at plant level.
    • Lead the team with ownership and incorporate the purpose and values of the company.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/production is preferred.
  • A minimum of Ten (10) years of related maintenance experience in food, pharmaceutical or other manufacturing areas is required.
  • Experience in managing and working with teams in Union environment is required.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
  • Effective leadership and facilitator abilities within a team are required. Should have the ability to influence and manage other internal customers and external suppliers/contractors to ensure success in the maintenance department.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical disciplines, production personnel and executives, both internal and external, are required.
  • Candidate should possess strong skills with Microsoft Office Suite. SAP experience preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to other Olam facilities as needed is required.

The pay for this role in the state of CA ranges from $108,000 - $160,000 and is based on position responsibilities and geographic location. Actual pay within this range may be determined based on candidate’s experience, qualifications and/or other determining factors.
