Position Summary
The Underwriter plays a critical role in assessing and mitigating risk in mortgage lending decisions. This position is responsible for analyzing loan applications, borrower financials, creditworthiness (applying the 5 Cs of credit), and property valuation to ensure that all loans comply with investor, regulatory, and company guidelines.
The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical abilities, a comprehensive understanding of mortgage underwriting principles, and the capability to make informed credit decisions while balancing risk with loan quality. The Underwriter will be expected to approach each loan with a problem-solving mindset, prioritize both team and borrowers needs over individual goals, and take ownership in driving results through diligent risk assessment and resourceful decision making.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
This is a hybrid position which requires in-office reporting to Anchor’s Thousand Oaks, CA office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Remote work is optional Monday and Friday.
Compensation
The base pay range for this position is $70,000 a year, plus annual discretionary bonus based on performance of the individual and company.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Risk Assessment & Responsibilities
- Evaluate borrower creditworthiness, assets, and collateral to assess risk and ensure compliance with investor guidelines.
- Identify potential red flags, fraud risks, and compensating factors, making well-supported lending recommendations.
- Borrower & Loan Level Documentation
- Ensure all required documentation is current and accurate
- Review loan level details (LTC, LTARV, and LTAIV) and borrower level details (Experience & Financials) to determine a credit decision.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with the operations, sales, and capital markets teams to ensure smooth and timely loan approvals.
- Provide clear and well-documented justifications for underwriting decisions to internal teams and external stakeholders as needed.

- Minimum 2 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, real estate, or a related field (or equivalent work experience)
- Ability to multi-task, manage multiple daily assignments and meet daily required deadlines
- Flexibility to work overtime if needed
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
- Proficiency in risk assessment and identifying mitigating factors
- Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Excel
