Job Summary
The Perianesthesia (Ortho PACU) Nurse Manager, reports to the Director of the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and is responsible to oversee the day-to-day operations and management of pre-operative and post-anesthesia care delivery.

- Manages the nursing staff in the PACU, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
- Provides leadership and direction to ensure efficient and high-quality patient care.
- Mentors and helps develop direct reports in accordance with organizational core values.
- Demonstrates effective communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills.
- Creating and managing work schedules for team members to always ensure adequate coverage. Ensures patient care assignments are delegated to promote a high functioning team and optimal patient outcomes.
- Oversees patient care in the preoperative phase and in the PACU, ensuring that patients are maximized preoperatively and properly monitored as they recover from anesthesia.
- Collaborates with other healthcare professionals, such as surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative teams, to ensure effective communication and seamless patient handoffs.
- Promotes OR efficiency standards regarding first case on time starts and room turnover targets.
- Communicates with patients and their families about the preoperative and post-surgical recovery processes, addressing any concerns or questions they may have.
- Monitors and maintains high standards of patient care.
- Implements best practices, protocols, and safety measures to ensure patient safety and well-being.
- Ensures audits are completed routinely to validate adherence to standards.
- Identifies areas for improvement in patient care processes and implements strategies to enhance the overall quality and efficiency of the PACU operations.
- Monitors, analyzes, and disseminates patient satisfaction survey results.
- Manages the budget for the PACU department, including allocating resources effectively, ordering supplies, and awareness of equipment maintenance.
- Serves as the nurse pharmacy liaison at the ASC in monitoring drug formulary, medication ordering, and safe injection practices.
- Participates in the ongoing education and training to nursing staff to keep them updated on the latest advancements, protocols, and techniques in post-anesthesia care.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and other healthcare technologies for patient documentation and management
- Prepares to respond to medical emergencies and crises that may arise in the PACU and ensuring that staff are well-trained in emergency protocols.
- Ensures that the Perianesthesia areas operate in accordance with regulatory standards and guidelines set by accrediting bodies such as Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
- Follows guidelines from American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) and Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN).
- Evolve in your role when performing supplemental responsibilities as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or associate degree plus five years relevant clinical experience
- Current NYS Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license required.
- Clinical experience in post-anesthesia care required.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Computer skills required with minimum proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within one year of hire.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within one year of hire.
- Orthopaedic Nursing experience preferred.
- Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) or Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA) preferred.
