Essential Functions

  • The Assistant Athletic Counselor/Learning Specialist will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operation in the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Services and will serve as the primary athletic counselor for multiple sports.
  • Provides academic advising and counseling to student-athletes in various academic majors in matters relating to goal setting, curriculum choice, course load, study habits and course selection.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of programs and services designed for under-prepared and learning challenged student-athletes, as well as, developing and implementing programmatic and training initiatives for the tutorial program.
  • Monitors academic progress toward degree for continuing eligibility and graduation.
  • Tracks student-athlete academic performance through use of weekly academic reports, progress reports and communication with faculty members.
  • Identifies at-risk students and refers students to appropriate resources.
  • Conduct daytime and evening study sessions with individual and/or small groups of students focusing on the development of academic skills and learning strategies.
  • Assists in the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of the tutoring staff.
  • Works individually with student-athletes concerning study skills and class related content/requirements.
  • Provides guidance to student-athletes with issues related to personal & professional development.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Adheres to all State of Alabama, University, NCAA, Sun Belt Conference and athletic department rules and policies pertaining to the position of Assistant Athletic Academic Counselor/Learning Specialist.
  • Reports any known NCAA violations or concerns to Senior Associate Athletic Director of Internal Operations and/or Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance.
  • Related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama.
  • Flexible, detail-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week which will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Desire to work a full-time schedule in the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Services.
