Job Summary

Under the direction of the radiation oncologist and chief therapist, the lead radiation therapist will be responsible for providing direct supervision of the radiation therapist. Ensuring the most optimal radiation therapy treatments are provided to our patients. This will be a team approach in professional operations with treatment delivery, simulation, and brachytherapy, or any other care related to the radiation therapy treatments.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides daily, direct supervision of the radiation therapists' performance, and the treatment delivery process to ensure timely, safe, efficient and cost-effective patient care
  • Maintains treatment, fabrication, and tumor localization activities at an efficient level
  • Establishes work schedules and assignments for the radiation therapy staff.
  • Assists as needed in all treatment-related procedures (including but not limited to: HDR, Brachytherapy, CT Simulation, Hyperthermia, and external beam radiation therapy)
  • Collaborates with physicians, medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, nursing and support staff to plan and implement corrective actions to improve treatment delivery standards
  • Assists leadership and staff in identifying and solving problems within the clinic
  • Maintains interpersonal and professional relations with staff
  • Displays effective leadership and supervisory capabilities
  • Coordinates peer review chart rounds
  • Monitors compliance with departmental leadership established policies and procedures
  • Coordinates timely requisition, receipt, care and maintenance of equipment and supplies in accordance with organizational policies
  • Participates in the hiring process, provides orientation, on-going training, and education
  • Performs performance evaluations, implements disciplinary and corrective action plans, and associated activities
  • Performs annual clinical competencies for radiation therapists with appropriate feedback for competency completion
  • Serves as the patient advocate ensuring optimal patient care and patient satisfaction
  • Serves as the staff advocate by actively supporting and encouraging open, honest staff participation in the decision-making processes and during conflict resolution
  • Performs audits to ensure accuracy in charting, coding and billing practices
  • Ensures accurate and timely reporting of equipment malfunctions, treatment errors, equipment damage, and radiation safety violations to the chief radiation therapist and the radiation director
  • Maintains education in current trends, new techniques/procedures, and evolving technology by attending staff meetings, in-services, and continuing education to maintain registry credentials
  • Responsible for monitoring medical supply inventory and assist in the ordering for supplies.
  • Partners with the chief radiation therapist in the monthly therapy meeting to discuss inter-group issues and resolutions to improve clinical workflow efficiency
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the radiation director, chief radiation therapist, and/or radiation oncologist
  • Assumes all job responsibilities as outlined in the radiation therapist job description
  • At his/her designated radiation center, assumes all duties/authority in the absence of the chief radiation therapist and/or the radiation director.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years' clinical experience (or equivalent) as a registered radiation therapist highly preferred
  • Possess a strong knowledge of immobilization, simulation, and all aspects of treatment delivery
  • Maintains registration in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and the State of Arizona
  • Meets all continuing education standards as they apply to registry eligibility
  • Computer experience with EMR knowledge
  • Excellent work ethic, including integrity, positive attitude, productive, organized, treats leadership with respect, excellent attendance, continuously learning and willing to ask for help
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a detail oriented, fast-paced setting

Licensure/Certification

ARRT Certification required

Must maintain CE credits to retain certification

Arizona RTT license

Valid CPR certification

Valid driver’s license

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Medical office setting

Moderate noise levels from medical setting and equipment

Minimum lifting requirements of 25 pounds in order to transfer equipment, help patients with positioning, and pack/unpack supplies

Frequent bending, twisting, and position changes in order to assist patients
