Job Summary
The Business Analytics Analyst II reports to University Analytics and is embedded within a campus department to provide data consultation, analysis, and new report development to meet departmental needs. Special emphasis on full data analysis and report creation, as well as providing executive summaries, visualizations of the analysis and understanding of the meanings within the data. The position will be embedded within the College of Liberal Arts (COLA), supporting the Dean and college leadership in making data-informed decisions across a wide range of academic and operational areas. The ideal candidate will be a data-savvy, collaborative professional who is passionate about higher education and motivated to make a meaningful impact through creative, insightful, and actionable data work.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Examples of the type of work this position may support include analyzing faculty workload and student credit hour (SCH) data to inform instructional planning and resource allocation; identifying curriculum bottlenecks and tracking degree progression to support student success initiatives; developing post-graduation outcomes reports to evaluate program effectiveness; supporting predictive modeling to anticipate enrollment patterns, course performance, or retention risk; and conducting course success analyses and policy impact evaluations with a focus on measurable outcomes and actionable insights.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Consults with department users on their reporting needs, advising on data availability and reporting formats to meet their objectives.
- Provides end-user consultation and training on the use of BI tools, reports, and dashboards.
- Helps stakeholders effectively understand and use data insights, offering guidance on data definitions and standards to ensure consistency across reporting and analytics.
- Additionally, provides executive summaries and data visualizations to clearly communicate the meaning of analysis to department leadership.
- Develops predictive and statistical data models using tools like Python or R, leveraging the data lakehouse platform for scalable data processing.
- Analyzes, validates, and cleans large datasets, designs multi-dimensional data models for advanced analytics, and uses SQL and BI tools to create insightful reports and interactive dashboards.
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams, offering expertise and guidance to fellow analysts, data stewards and department users in areas like analytics products, data management best practices, model development, and tool usage.
- Serve as the voice of data within COLA, working closely with the Dean, College Business Officer, HR staff, and academic leadership.
- Participate in leadership and staff meetings to help shape conversations around resource allocation, budgeting, enrollment planning, and student success and faculty success policy and planning strategies.
- Be able to translate complex data into clear, meaningful narratives and visualizations for senior decision-makers.
- Play an active role in university-wide analytics governance groups such as the Data Stewards Council.
- Educate and support others in the college on effective self-service data use.
- In coordination with the central analytics team, the individual will help develop new dashboards, reports, and ensure alignment with governance rules and standards for data product development.
- Acting as a bridge between the central unit and the college, this person will promote transparency, share information, and foster professional collaboration across both units.
- Performs other duties assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems or related discipline.
- Five (5) years in SQL programming.
- In-depth working knowledge and experience of data mining in SQL or No-SQL data environments.
- Experience developing in at least one (1) object-oriented programming language.
- Experience in a data analysis, data driven research and/or predictive analysis.
- Master’s degree or higher in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
- Ten or more years of experience in programming, statistics, or data science within higher education.
- Proficiency in SQL and Python programming, with experience analyzing and developing data models on a data lakehouse platform.
- Proven experience in building predictive or statistical models.
- Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP) and text data analytics.
- Professional statistical reasoning, data storytelling, and communication skills, along with the ability to align diverse stakeholders around shared data definitions and metrics.
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively, with a keen attention to detail and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset that fits well within COLA’s open and engaged culture.
- Ability to work well with people in all levels of the organization.
- Ability to prepare and present reports and dashboards to various audiences is required.
- Displays attention to detail and accuracy.
- Professional MS Office skills (Word, Excel), SharePoint.
- Excellent organization, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with people at all levels of the organization.
- Exhibit intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a willingness to support data literacy efforts across the college.
- Skilled in creating BI reports and interactive dashboards using tools such as Databricks, Qlik, Strategy, OAC, or SAS Viya.
- Proven ability to create executive summaries of complex data analysis and data storytelling to communicate insights effectively to stakeholders.
- Familiarity with version control tools, such as Git.
