About Us

Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, students’ homes, and their communities.

Who We Seek

We seek someone who loves working with numbers, enjoys solving financial puzzles, has strong communication skills and thrives in a mission-driven environment. Whether you’re a recent graduate with a strong academic foundation or a professional with hands-on accounting experience, we’ll give you the tools and support to succeed.

Responsibilities

You’ll work closely with our CFO to help shape and streamline financial systems that support the future growth of the Carroll Center. Your work will help us deliver on our mission—supporting individuals who are blind or visually impaired—by keeping our finances accurate, transparent, and compliant.

  • Some of your key responsibilities will include:
  • Preparing monthly financial reports, including income statements, cash flows, and budget variance analysis
  • Maintaining and reconciling balance sheet and general ledger accounts
  • Assisting with budget creation and review across departments
  • Supporting the billing and payables process
  • Recommending improvements to accounting systems and processes
  • Helping manage food service vendor budgets and troubleshoot operational issues
  • Preparing for audits and supporting tax and government filings (e.g., MA-UFR, NY CHAR 500, IRS 990, MA PC)
  • Presenting financials to the Audit and Finance Committee and taking meeting minutes (5 meetings/year)
  • Supporting special projects and organizational initiatives as needed
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field and/or and/or equivalent hands on accounting or financial experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driving setting.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, lookups—you love a good spreadsheet!)
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • A high level of motivation, initiative, and attention to detail
  • A collaborative, customer-service mindset—you’ll interact with staff across all departments and levels
  • A willingness to learn new financial systems and database tools (training provided)
  • Bonus: Experience working with state contracts, nonprofit accounting, or government filings

Benefits

We offer a generous benefits package to include health and dental coverage, vision, Flexible Spending Account, 3 weeks accrued vacation, personal day, 12 accrued sick days, 12 holidays and a retirement program (403b) with up to a 4% employer match.
