Summary:

The Transportation Officer is responsible for the secure and safe transport of ICE detainees to and from designated locations including medical appointments, court hearings, ports of entry, and other government facilities. Officers operate under strict adherence to ICE National Detention Standards 2019 (NDS 2019), DHS PREA (6 CFR Part 115), and applicable federal, state, and local transportation and safety laws. This is an armed position that requires high situational awareness, defensive driving skills, and strict compliance with detainee classification, restraint protocols, and chain-of-custody procedures. Transportation Officers must coordinate effectively with ICE/ERO, medical staff, court personnel, and receiving facilities to ensure safe and orderly movements that uphold detainee rights and security requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely transport detainees to and from external appointments, facilities, or transfers using ICE-approved vehicles.
  • Maintain secure custody of detainees in transit and during brief stops or handoffs to authorized personnel.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles, ensure maintenance compliance, and report mechanical issues.
  • Complete transport logs, detainee movement records, and incident reports with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain constant radio contact with dispatch, supervisors, and receiving facilities.
  • Apply, monitor, and remove restraints in accordance with ICE and PREA guidelines, ensuring safety and dignity.
  • Respond appropriately to vehicle emergencies, medical situations, or disturbances in transit.
  • Follow ICE guidelines for secure movement, proper segregation, and chain of custody in accordance with NDS 2019.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen (required for access to DHS sensitive systems and transport duties).
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1?2 years of relevant experience in transportation, corrections, law enforcement, or military.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
  • Must pass firearms qualification and be certified in accordance with ICE Firearms Policy.
  • Must pass DHS/ICE background investigation and fitness screening.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, enter/exit transport vehicles frequently, and manage detainee movement.
  • English fluency required; Spanish proficiency preferred.
  • Must complete ICE transport procedures, PREA compliance training, CPR/First Aid, and defensive driving.

Position Conditions & Schedule:

  • Rotating shifts, including early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday assignments.
  • Extensive in-state and local travel with potential overnight trips.
  • All transport operations must follow strict ICE detainee security procedures and PREA standards.
  • Subject to Trusted Workforce 2.0 continuous vetting and ICE performance monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior ICE or BOP transportation experience..
  • Certified in defensive driving or EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course).
  • Military or corrections background with secure transport responsibilities.
