Summary:

St. Louis Catholic Church, a large, vibrant parish in Waco, TX, seeks a part-time psalmist/

cantor to sing for Vigil and Sunday Masses. The psalmist/cantor will have the opportunity to

sing at other scheduled liturgies during the Liturgical year. The psalmist/cantor will collaborate

with accompanists and vocalists already on staff. This position reports to the Director of Sacred Music.

Ministerial Character

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish of St. Louis Catholic Church which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at St. Louis Catholic Church help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential Duties

  • As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of St. Louis Catholic Church in both your professional and personal life.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
  • Lead the responsorial psalm, propers, and other music at Masses and other parish Liturgies as

needed.

  • Learn and rehearse new music.
  • Rehearse with and be a member of the parish choir or small musical groups once a week and

as needed.

  • Collaborate with Director of Sacred Music and other staff musicians.

work a flexible schedule including nights, evenings, and weekends as required. Compensation

is paid per Mass/rehearsal depending on education and experience.

Requirements

Education/Experience/Expectations:

  • Degree in Music or related field, equivalent experience, or working toward a music degree.
  • Degree or certification in Liturgy, Sacred Music, Pastoral Studies or equivalent are a plus.
  • Proficiency in reading music.
  • Significant choral experience.
  • Familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgy and liturgical practices preferred.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be in compliance with the diocesan Ethics and Integrity in Ministry requirements.
  • Professional dress, communication, and social media use are expected.
