Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Chief Financial Officer oversees and manages all general financial affairs, analysis, investments, and financial risk tolerance. The CFO provides direction and leadership for the senior leadership team, directly supervises the finance office staff, leads strategic financial initiatives to maximize good stewardship, and assists with development of policies and ensures their implementation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or equivalent; MBA, CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in accounting and financial management required; non-profit experience preferred.
  • Personable with ability to teach staff to elevate the financial skills. Experienced in effectively leading and developing a staff team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required including financial analysis, budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple concurrent tasks with tight deadlines according to a defined set of best practices.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills necessary. Organizational problem-solving and creative and critical thinking are mandatory.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with system selection, new system implementation, and project management. Personal computer skills required.

Essential Functions

  • Strategic & Organizational Leadership
  • Partner with the CEO and strategy leadership team to develop innovative financial strategies that drive growth in programs, services, and organizational impact.
  • Conceptualize, formulate, and analyze internal and external information and trends to identify risks, opportunities, and emerging needs. Provide the CEO and strategy team with recommendations that support long-term sustainability and mission advancement.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Operations/COO in the development and implementation of the annual operating budget, ensuring realistic budget targets and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Financial Oversight & Planning
  • Oversee all aspects of financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Oversee the development of the annual operating budget, including all branch/dept budgets. Works closely with operations staff to ensure that budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner.
  • Provide timely, consistent, and actionable financial information and insights to the CEO, strategy team, and Board of Directors.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, not-for-profit accounting standards, and all relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Oversees preparation of reports to granting agencies, YMCA of the USA, and governmental agencies. Oversees preparation of tax returns. Participates in obtaining grants.
  • Analyze monthly financial reports and highlight critical areas of concern for corrective action.
  • Manage cash flow and liquidity, maintain healthy operating reserves, and efficient use of organizational resources.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee on matters related to finance and investments. Recommend fiscal policies for board consideration.
  • Department & Team Leadership
  • Oversee the accounting and information systems departments.
  • Supervise accounting department staff, fostering a culture of leadership development, accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead and mentor the finance team to ensure operational excellence and support across branches.
  • Improves processes while removing inefficiencies, teaching others, analyzing information, and projecting future positions to fill in gap.
  • Audit, Compliance & Risk Management
  • Lead preparation and coordination of internal and external audits. Serve as the primary liaison to external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with all reporting requirements, including IRS Form 990, sales and use tax returns, 1099s, and payroll-related tax filings.
  • Protect and maintain the Association’s tax-exempt status and facilitate required documentation for exemption applications.
  • Manage organizational insurance programs, ensuring adequate coverage and protection of assets.
  • Develop and maintain robust financial policies, internal controls, and risk management systems.
  • Banking, Investments & External Relations
  • Manage relationships with banks, financial institutions, and investment managers. Oversee all banking, debt financing, and investment activity.
  • Evaluates and manages the annual renewal of association insurances.
  • Negotiate terms and secure financing for capital projects in alignment with organizational needs and financial capacity.
  • Represent the YMCA with professionalism in all external financial and regulatory matters.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Serve as Director on Duty as scheduled.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
  • Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.

Required Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field (MBA, CPA or CMA strongly preferred).
