The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County (“BXDA”) is charged with the twin goals of ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. By “Pursuing Justice with Integrity,” the BXDA places a focus on assistance for crime victims while simultaneously ensuring fairness to defendants. Moreover, the BXDA aims to balance the need to seek appropriate punishment for certain crimes while recognizing when punitive measures do not adequately advance justice. In furtherance of this mission, the BXDA seeks experienced and enthusiastic, well-qualified Special Criminal Investigator.

The Conviction Integrity Bureau reinvestigates claims of actual innocence and wrongful conviction. These investigations comprise the Office’s most serious cases, the majority of which are homicides where new, credible, viable, evidence-based leads of wrongful conviction exist. The Special Criminal Investigator will work in collaboration with the attorneys of the Conviction Integrity Bureau to determine which cases are appropriate for reinvestigation. Where indicated, the Special Criminal Investigator will develop investigation strategies and lead the execution of reinvestigations, including but not limited to locating and interviewing witnesses and locating evidence for forensic testing.

Job Responsibilities

  • Review case files and in conjunction with ADAs in the Bureau create an investigation plan
  • Identify and locate high value target witnesses
  • Interview witnesses in the field both locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Locate evidence and deliver it for forensic testing
  • Communicate and coordinate with local and federal law enforcement agencies

Requirement

  • CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID NYS DRIVER’S LICENCE.
  • This is a sworn police officer position. The candidate must meet all qualifications to be certified as a police officer in the NYS DCJS Police registry. This position requires the successful completion of police academy training in New York State and requires applicants to pass a mandatory background check to carry a firearm.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

  • A Minimum of 15 years as a detective or investigator, specializing in investigating homicides, cold cases, and/or violent sexual offences. Former NYPD experience preferred. - Proven background in examining the integrity of evidence, including statements, line-ups, DNA, fingerprints, forensic testing, and other relevant facts presented through an investigation. - Proficiency in locating and interviewing witnesses (whether incarcerated, in the field, out of state, or in our community). - Extensive experience locating, collecting, processing, and analyzing physical and forensic evidence to assist in the prosecution of violent crime investigations, including advanced utilization of digital forensic investigative techniques. - Competency in the use of various databases to perform background and information searches, including a proficiency in social media research. - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. - Must have a valid New York State driver’s license.
