Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Adaptive Swim Instructor creates a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for swimmers with diverse abilities. Instructors are responsible for planning and delivering effective swim lessons aligned with YMCA guidelines while upholding the highest standards of safety and care.

Schedule

Part-time; based on 7–8 week swim lesson terms. Weekday afternoons and weekends preferred.

Swim Inclusion Program

  • Create individualized, confidence-building swim experiences for neurodivergent swimmers and those with special needs.
  • Set and track goals that build toward water safety, swim skills, and leisure readiness.
  • Modify instructional strategies to meet the unique needs, attention levels, and personalities of each swimmer.
  • Communicate clearly with caregivers and supervisors; maintain accurate records and session notes.
  • Maintain and organize adaptive equipment.
  • Provide a nurturing and empathetic approach while maintaining structure and safety.

Swim Instructor Duties

  • Arrive on deck, prepared and professionally dressed.
  • Teach classes according to YMCA of the USA standards.
  • Begin and end lessons on time; take attendance and track swimmer progress.
  • Maintain and update lesson plans and progress reports.
  • Explain policies and pool rules to participants and parents.
  • Ensure every child exits the water into the care of a parent/guardian.
  • Report emergencies or facility issues promptly.
  • Support lifeguards in the event of an emergency.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 16
  • Preferred certifications (or willingness to obtain upon hire):
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid & Emergency Oxygen
  • YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding
  • Swim Lesson Instructor (YSL or WSI)
  • Required: Swim Angelfish Level 1 certification within 30 days of hire
  • Prior experience working with diverse populations, including youth with special needs
  • Calm, creative, and empathetic with flexible teaching approaches
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply

Physical Demands

  • Pass YMCA lifeguard water test
  • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Demonstrate 4 of 6 primary strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke)
  • Ability to remain alert, respond quickly, and communicate effectively
