POSITION TITLE: Director of Advancement

SUPERVISED BY: Director & CEO

The Director of Advancement serves as a key leadership team member and strategic partner to the Director & CEO. They are responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive advancement strategy to support the museum’s mission and long-term sustainability. The Director of Advancement oversees all fundraising initiatives including major gifts, annual giving, corporate sponsorships, membership, planned giving, grants, and special events, as well as donor stewardship, capital campaigns, and community partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising and communications strategy aligned with the museum’s strategic plan. Lead strategy for and planning of capital and endowment campaigns.

Fundraising & Development

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major individual, foundation and corporate donors. Oversee all aspects of fundraising including annual fund membership programs, capital campaigns, endowment gifts, and planned giving. Supervise grant writing and reporting to institutional funders. Create strategy for and oversee special events, aligning them with strategic priorities and increasing revenue.

Donor & Board Relations

  • Engage and partner with the Board of Trustees and key volunteers to expand fundraising capacity. Manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects. Lead strategy and logistics for donor recognition, stewardship, and engagement events.

Team Management

  • Supervise and mentor a team of development and special events professionals Establish performance goals and professional development opportunities for advancement staff.

Education, Expertise And Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in arts administration, nonprofit management, or related field preferred. Minimum of 15 years of progressive fundraising experience, preferably in the arts or cultural sector. Proven track record in major gift solicitation and successful fundraising campaigns; experience with capital campaigns a plus. Demonstrated success in personally cultivating and soliciting gifts of $100,000+ from individuals and foundations. Effective communicator and public speaker; excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills. Strong leadership and team management experience; excellent problem-solving and multitasking skills. Genuine enthusiasm for the transformational power of the visual arts and education. Intellectual curiosity and the capacity to learn and adapt. Familiarity with donor databases and data-driven fundraising strategies.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including frequent evenings and weekends.

This is a full-time, exempt position with full benefits. Salary $175,000-$ 200,000, commensurate with experience.
