Job Description

Come join Coherent's innovative team supporting Manufacturing Engineering, Coating, Engineering and Operations with technical guidance and coordination related to mechanical design, CNC programming, and manufacturing processes for assigned projects. In this dynamic role, you'll be responsible to provide tooling design support to new and existing projects. You'll help design and develop assembly and testing procedures for new projects and associated procedures.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Tool Design and Programming Support

  • Uses expert level knowledge to plan major programs and lead teams. Coordinates design engineering activities on assigned projects. Works independently to achieve goals and objectives. Recognized as a site expert in Mechanical Design Engineering discipline.
  • Responsible for product design and process development activities on assigned projects; ensures product designs and processes meet customer specifications and technical requirements.
  • Writes and validates CNC programs and supports shop floor personnel to troubleshoot programming and manufacturing problems.
  • Assures product designs and processes are audited and analyzed for further improvements.
  • Supports quotation process by reviewing customer drawings and internal quotations with respect to mechanical design and fabrication issues; lays out conceptual manufacturing plan; ensures design concepts are manufacturable, and product can be built using existing Coherent processes; identifies technical issues that require either exceptions or development activities.
  • Resolves technical issues as they arise during fabrication with assistance from pertinent Operations personnel and Process Owner Engineers; identifies root causes of problems using analytical techniques; identifies the appropriate resources to resolve the issue; provides clear, complete, and concise reports regarding technical issues.
  • Supports program management with technical advice and direction on assigned programs. Adheres to program financial goals and provides financial estimates and status updates to program management.
  • Supports Business Development activities through participation in customer presentations and proposal preparation.
  • Proposed equipment and tooling are studied, designed, developed. Interfaces with vendors are developed and maintained to assure proper results.
  • Appropriation requests or vendor procurement specifications are prepared with the appropriate cost justification and analysis.
  • Equipment, tools, and fixtures are designed, reviewed, and purchased.
  • Writes manufacturing work instructions and Bills of Materials.
  • Troubleshoots product quality and production yield problems and leads corrective action teams.
  • Responsible for successful implementation of new product designs and manufacturing processes in production.

Education & Experience

  • Typically requires a minimum of 7 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; or 5 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience.
  • An understanding of optical and mechanical design processes and the ability to apply engineering theories and concepts are essential

Skills

  • Must be able to engage machine shop personnel and discuss ways to tackle difficult machining problems and set/meet schedule.
  • Solid understanding of design for assembly and integration in complex opto-mechanical devices including tolerance stack analysis.
  • Experience in metal machining (milling, lathe, EDM, etc.) and conventional optical fabrication technologies (grinding, polishing, coating, testing, etc.).
  • Experience in design for manufacturing across the entire product cycle
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with analytical tools used for problem solving and process development, including DOE
