Job Summary

  • The RN–Pre-Admission is responsible for conducting comprehensive preoperative assessments to optimize patient safety and readiness for surgical or procedural care
  • This role ensures coordination of pre-admission testing, documentation, patient education, and interdisciplinary communication
  • The RN supports safe and efficient perioperative planning, reducing surgical delays and ensuring continuity of care from evaluation to admission

Essential Functions

  • Performs thorough nursing assessments via phone or in-person to identify patient-specific risks and needs prior to surgery
  • Reviews and verifies diagnostic test results, labs, EKGs, and consultations needed before admission
  • Collaborates with anesthesia, surgery, and other clinical departments to address and resolve any pre-admission concerns
  • Provides patient education regarding preoperative instructions, medication adjustments, fasting guidelines, and procedure logistics
  • Communicates effectively with patients and their families to ensure understanding and adherence to preoperative plans
  • Identifies patients requiring further medical clearance and facilitates referrals and follow-up
  • Documents assessment findings and care coordination activities accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Maintains knowledge of evidence-based practices and preoperative protocols to reduce same-day cancellations
  • Supports performance improvement and patient experience initiatives related to surgical readiness
  • Participates in team meetings and continuing education to maintain clinical competency

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment
  • Ability to assess complex patient medical histories for surgical risk factors
  • Knowledge of preoperative guidelines, surgical workflows, and anesthesia considerations
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and skilled in managing multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in EMR systems, scheduling platforms, and clinical documentation tools
  • Committed to patient-centered care, teamwork, and continuous learning
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – preferred (depending on patient population served)

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in surgical services, ambulatory care, or acute care nursing preferred
  • Prior experience in pre-admission or perioperative services a plus
