Job Description: Safety Manager

CLASSIFICATION PURPOSE

This exempt supervisory position is responsible for performing a variety of administrative, supervisory, and safety tasks related to field operations, legal compliance, and program development aimed at creating and sustaining a results-oriented safety culture; perform related work as required.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees multiple company-wide safety programs (e.g., IIPP, Emergency Action Plan, Heat Illness Prevention Program, Vehicle Safety Program, Hazard Communication Program, Code of Safe Practices);
  • Directs and reviews safety plans annually, and revises those plans as needed;
  • Supervises (e.g., selection, training, evaluation, discipline) safety officers and driver safety trainers;
  • Ensures employees comply with safety policies, procedures, and responsibilities;
  • Conducts safety audits on a routine basis in terms of safety checklist inspection;
  • Ensures subordinate staff complete all administrative responsibilities (e.g., paperwork, follow-ups, meetings) according to business requirements;
  • Reviews all safety audits for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness;
  • Maintains electronic safety data, in combination with the safety tracking system to ensure all information is current, complete, and legally compliant;
  • Creates a Standardized Operating Procedure for all departments (e.g., Construction, Erosion Control, Shop/Yard);
  • Holds Safety Officers accountable for delivering necessary training (e.g., new task or equipment, new hazards that are discovered on sites) to all new hires and current employees as required;
  • Ensures compliance with all OSHA-related training requirements and standards;
  • Ensures training facilitator uses different forms of modalities for diverse levels of learning (e.g., audible, tactile, and visual aids);
  • Provides cross training of departmental staff on all aspects of in-house training;
  • Conducts performance and productivity checks;
  • Coordinates safety officers’ activities related to investigations of all accidents and injuries;
  • Works with Office Claims Administrator within the 48 hours of the incident;
  • Ensures all field safety audits are in compliance with the IIPP, Code of Federal Regulations, and Cal-OSHA guidelines;
  • Ensures Safety Officers report to supervisors for corrective actions and coordinate a timeline with follow up;
  • Modifies the QC program based on preference corrective actions plan;
  • Assists the Estimating Department as necessary;
  • Works with Safety Officers to analyze safety data and generate reports when areas of weakness are discovered;
  • Oversees and assists in weekly tailgate safety meetings;
  • Maintains focus on tailgate safety training content to ensure materials remain relevant, applied, and legally compliant;
  • Addresses any safety areas that need to be corrected, and informs executive team as appropriate;
  • Completes administrative duties (e.g., paperwork, document review, and safety forms) on time;
  • Ensures compliance with legal requirements and company policies;
  • Maintains SDS documentation;
  • Performs or oversees functions that ensure vehicle, yard, and job site safety;
  • Informs Managers, Supervisors, and employees of safety-related issues;
  • Works efficiently using the Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office suite, and company software;
  • Trains a person at each location to do safety;
  • Provides excellent service (e.g., accurate, complete, and timely) to clients, work-site partners, and company staff in a courteous and efficient manner

  • Customer Service: Consistently exceeds customer expectations; keeps customers well-informed, listens to them attentively, and addresses their concerns; enacts a personal approach to customer service
  • Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with respect, collaboration, and support in such a way that work relationships are improved and morale is increased; is approachable; has effective communication skills

Salary range: $80k 110k DOE

Education/Experience

An example of the preferred education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies for this position includes: at least four (4) years of professional safety experience in the landscape industry similar to that described above.

SPECIAL NOTES, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Pre-employment: Incumbents must sign the Confidentiality, Non-disclosure, and Non-solicitation Agreement prior to their first day on the job.

License: Incumbents are required to possess a valid California driver’s license.

Language: Bilingual English and Spanish skills are required of this job classification.

Certifications: This job classification must possess a Cal-OSHA 30-hour certification within three months in position and maintain that certification annually. Incumbents must attain their CPR-First Aid certification during their first six months of employment and maintain that certification thereafter.

Working Conditions: Work is predominately outdoors, exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, and noise levels; exposure to dust, pesticides, herbicides, grease, oils, dust, fumes, and electrical currents.

Background Investigation: Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates may be subject to a background investigation and/or drug test.

Introductory Period: Incumbents appointed to this job classification serve an introductory period of three months.
