Job Summary: The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Tutor will support high school students enrolled in the AVID elective course by facilitating collaborative study groups, encouraging academic success, and promoting college readiness. Tutors serve as role models, mentors, and guides to help students develop effective learning strategies, organizational skills, and critical thinking abilities. Key Responsibilities: - Facilitate AVID tutorial sessions twice a week using the Socratic method and AVID inquiry-based strategies. - Conference with AVID students each week during Binder Checks using constructive feedback and encouragement. - Communicate regularly with AVID teachers and program coordinators regarding student performance and needs. - Guide students through academic challenges, helping them identify gaps in understanding and encouraging peer collaboration. - Assist students in setting academic goals and developing plans for improvement. - Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating effective study habits, professionalism, and a commitment to education. - Monitor and document student progress during tutorial sessions. - Each tutor will be trained through the Riverside County Office of Education on a paid Saturday training day. Biweekly tutor meetings will be on campus with the AVID site team. Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent required; currently enrolled in college coursework preferred. - Strong academic skills in core subject areas (Math, Science, English, Social Studies). - Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations. - Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. - Ability to facilitate group discussions and promote collaborative learning. - Commitment to the AVID mission of closing the opportunity gap and preparing all students for college and career success. - Must pass background checks and meet district employment requirements.
