Summary of Position

The Museum of Art + Light (MoA+L) seeks a skilled and proactive Facilities + Maintenance Superintendent to lead all facilities maintenance operations for the museum’s building, systems, and physical infrastructure.

This position is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive preventative maintenance program (CIP), ensuring building reliability, minimizing downtime, and preserving the condition of museum assets. The role includes hands-on maintenance work, oversight of vendors and contractors, and leadership of the maintenance function.

The Facilities + Maintenance Superintendent also serves as a secondary first responder for facility-related incidents and safety concerns, supporting overall building security in coordination with museum staff. The role is primarily maintenance-focused, with security responsibilities limited to situational response and coordination.

This position reports to the Director of Finance + Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Leadership & Preventative Maintenance (Core Focus)

· Monitor, patrol, and secure all museum spaces (public and restricted).

· Protect artwork, staff, visitors, and museum property at all times.

· Enforce museum safety and security policies with professionalism and courtesy.

· Monitor and operate security systems, including alarms, access control, and CCTV.

· Respond promptly to incidents, including accidents, emergencies, and facility issues.

· Provide escorts and manage access for vendors, contractors, and staff.

· Serve as the on-site point of contact during emergency situations.

· Maintain accurate security logs, incident reports, pass-down notes, and documentation.

Hands-On Maintenance & Repairs

Perform basic to intermediate repairs, including:

  • Carpentry (repairs, adjustments, minor construction)
  • Plumbing (minor leaks, clogs, fixture replacement)
  • Electrical (fixtures, basic troubleshooting)
  • General facility upkeep (patching, painting, hardware, lighting)
  • Monitor and support building systems, including HVAC and mechanical equipment
  • Support maintenance and troubleshooting of exhibit-related systems and technology when applicable
  • Ensure the museum environment meets standards for safety, cleanliness, and presentation

Vendor & Contractor Management

· Coordinate and oversee third-party vendors, contractors, and service providers

· Obtain quotes, schedule work, and ensure quality and timely completion

· Monitor service contracts (HVAC, fire systems, elevators, etc.) and ensure compliance

· Manage maintenance-related budgets in coordination with leadership

Operations & Event Support

· Support museum operations and special events with facility readiness, setup needs, and troubleshooting

· Coordinate with internal departments to ensure building systems support exhibitions and programming

· Maintain readiness of public and back-of-house spaces

Safety & Security Support (Secondary Role)

· Serve as a first responder for facility-related incidents, including mechanical failures, hazards, or emergencies

· Assist with building security during incidents by coordinating response, securing affected areas, and communicating with leadership

· Support enforcement of safety protocols and emergency procedures

· Maintain awareness of building activity and report concerns appropriately

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Qualifications

· High school diploma required; technical certification or trade education preferred

· Minimum of 5+ years of experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or a related field

· Prior experience in a leadership, supervisory, or lead maintenance role preferred

· Demonstrated experience with preventative maintenance systems and facility planning

Technical Skills & Experience

Working knowledge of

o HVAC systems and preventative maintenance

o Electrical systems (basic troubleshooting and repair)

o Plumbing systems

o General construction and building repair

· Ability to read basic building plans, manuals, and technical documentation

· Experience coordinating contractors and service providers

· Familiarity with maintenance tracking systems or documentation processes

Work Schedule & Environment

  • Full-time position with occasional evening or weekend work based on operational or event needs
  • On-call availability for urgent maintenance issues may be required
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Regular work in mechanical rooms, outdoor conditions, and active facility environments

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $60,000 – $65,000/year (exempt FTE position)
