Description & Details: MPUA is seeking a temporary, part-time Communications Assistant/Intern to support outreach and strategic communication efforts that highlight the value of hometown utilities. This role will assist in creating clear, engaging content for members and the public, helping translate complex industry topics into accessible messaging across multiple platforms.

This role is ideal for a student or early-career professional interested in communications, public relations, marketing, or the utility industry. This intern will gain hands-on experience in content creation, digital media, and event support while working alongside experienced communications professionals.

This position reports to the Manager-Communications and works closely with the Chief Member Services Officer.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Assist in writing and editing content for newsletters, social media, website updates, and other communications materials
  • Support the development and design of MPUA’s electronic newsletters and quarterly magazine
  • Help maintain and update MPUA’s social media channels to ensure timely, engaging content
  • Assist with basic graphic design projects using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar tools)
  • Provide event support, including preparation of materials, on-site assistance, and post-event follow-up
  • Capture and organize photos and video content for communications use
  • Assist with website updates and content management
  • Provide general support for communications projects and campaigns as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex topics
  • Working knowledge and experience with social media platforms and best practices
  • Functional knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar graphic design tools
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a professional environment
  • Interest in public utilities, local government, or community-focused organizations is a plus

Work Schedule & Details

  • Part-time, temporary position (scheduled hours and duration flexible based on candidate availability and the Manager – Communication’s approval)
  • Hybrid or in-office work options available
  • Some travel in the region and occasional evening support may be required
