JOB SUMMARY
With supervision under the Anchorage Animal Care & Control (AACC) Community Outreach Manager, the Community Outreach Assistant serves as the administrative support function for both the volunteer and public relations programs ran by the Shelter. This position will have the ability to help in all areas around the Shelter and requires a high level of professionalism, initiative, motivation, customer service and must demonstrative the ability to use sound judgement while interacting with the public, AACC partners, and other employees.
The position has a 40-hour work week with comprehensive benefits package and PTO available!
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum age 18
- High School Diploma or GED
- Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English
- Minimum one year of experience in an administrative support role
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite – specifically Outlook, Word and Excel
- Detail oriented and strong organizational skills
- Good time management skills with the ability to perform assigned tasks efficiently and safely
- Strong customer service skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in an animal welfare agency
- Experience administering or managing social media
- Experience administering or leading a function within a volunteer program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serves as administrative assistant to the Community Outreach Manager and must have a thorough working knowledge of all the various functions and programs offered by AACC.
- Participates in the planning, development, implementation, and support for the Public Relations, social media, and Volunteer Coordination programs.
- Assists with recruitment and screening of prospective volunteers
- Oversees daily volunteers’ activities
- Monitors and updates social networking outreach for AACC, as well as updates the AACC section of the Municipal website, as needed. Current social channels include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and NextDoor
- Provides tours of AACC to the public, school groups, and other requesting parties
- Works closely with news media, community leaders, and others to increase public awareness of the organization and its roles, services, and objectives
- Helps to coordinate marketing and promotion of special events
- Participates in animal behavior assessment program
- Aids in the planning of events and special events
- Helps to maintain an atmosphere where opinions and suggestions for program development and shelter improvements are encouraged.
- Participates in regular or special training to upgrade or improve job skills, knowledge, performance or professionalism
- Represents Denali Universal Services in a positive, courteous, and professional manner
- Other related work as assigned, including cross training on other positions

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Most of the work is performed in a professional office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities and abilities. Some exposure to the shelter’s noisy and odorous environment; may interact with the public in emotional and occasionally hostile situations; care for and handle all animals in a safe, effective and humane manner.
