Folsom History
Background
Folsom History is looking for a Visitor Services Associate who can support our nonprofit organization during the coming year. Folsom History currently operates two sites, the Folsom History Museum and The Square, with a third location under development – the Chinese Heritage Museum. Our goal is to leverage all three sites and associated programming to become a sustainable, thriving family of museums.
The main responsibilities of the Visitor Services Associate include opening and closing the museum, welcoming visitors as they walk through the door, answering inquiries and phone calls, and providing admission/retail sales and project support. This person will also assist the Museum Engagement Manager with volunteer training, and other projects (as needed). All Folsom History employees and volunteers are expected to provide the very best visitor services experience possible.
Responsibilities
The part-time Visitor Services Associate will report to the Museum Engagement Manager and work closely with the rest of the Folsom History Team. Specific responsibilities include:
- Ready the museum for visitors by ensuring the Museum and Gift Store are prepared and cleaned, interactives and facilities are organized/stocked, and signage is properly displayed
- Act as primary key holder when other staff are not on the premise
- Open and close register(s) by maintaining accurate cash counts and ensuring daily sales are deposited and reconciled
- Provide exemplary customer service by helping with museum admissions, memberships, inquiries, and phone calls
- Process retail transactions using a point-of-sale system, answer product questions, and encourage add-on sales
- Promote Folsom History initiatives including its programs, memberships, fundraising efforts, and volunteer opportunities
- Assist in the training, guidance, and support of Visitor Services Volunteers by providing the most current information on Folsom History’s museums and exhibits, educational and public programs, and other visitor related information
- Help generate sales through product placement, merchandise displays, and regular restocking
- Assist with general inventory counts and reporting discrepancies
- Represent Folsom History at community events on Sutter Street
- Provide administrative support including product research/review and data entry
- Other duties (as assigned)
Requirements
- Previous customer service and/or retail experience required
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Familiarity with POS systems and money handling preferred
- Must be dependable, trustworthy, professional, and positive as this position is primarily focused on providing an engaging visitor experience while leading a team of Visitor Services volunteers
- Required to work weekend shifts with flexibility to work other dates (as needed). This may include working evenings and select holiday
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with and interact positively with others
- Welcomes feedback and coaching; is comfortable seeking advice from other staff members
- Have a high school diploma or GED; an interest in history preferred
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift packages weighing up to 40 pounds
- High level of energy, creativity, flexibility, and good humor!
Work Environment
Most working hours will be spent at the Visitor Services Desk in the Folsom History Museum. Shifts may vary but will typically be Saturdays and Sundays (10:30 am to 4:30 pm) with another weekday depending on availability. Light to moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, and lifting boxes is required.
All Folsom History employees accrue earned sick time and receive a 30-min paid lunch on days worked 5- hours or more.
