The City of Fairfield is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Associate Civil Engineer (Plan Check) who thrives in a collaborative public service environment and demonstrates strong independent judgment. The ideal candidate will have experience performing plan review and coordination for complex private development and public improvement projects, including interpreting and applying engineering standards, municipal codes, and applicable regulations. This individual is a self-starter who can manage assignments with minimal supervision, prioritize competing deadlines, and confidently navigate complex development and infrastructure projects while building effective working relationships with internal staff, developers, consultants, and the public. Compensation & Benefits
Estimated Total Compensation: $162,870 - $191,290 * | Base Salary: $114,912 - $139,669
- Estimated total compensation includes base salary and the annualized value of employer-paid benefits and contributions, such as deferred compensation, medical/dental/vision insurance, retiree health contributions, and other applicable benefits. Actual compensation and benefit values may vary based on individual benefit elections, coverage levels, and length of service.
Benefits
The position is represented by the Fairfield General Managers' Association ("FGMA") and offers a robust benefits package featuring generous retirement contributions and leave accruals. Key benefits include:
- 401(a) Deferred Compensation: City contributes 10% of salary; employee contributes a minimum of 4%
- 457 Deferred Compensation: Optional employee-funded plan with pre-tax and/or Roth contribution options
- Personal Leave: 100 hours annually (accrues at 3.85 hours/pay period)
- Vacation: 10–20 days annually based on years of City service
- CalPERS pension eligibility
- City-paid life insurance and generous contributions to retirement health savings accounts
- Tuition Reimbursement up to $4,000 annually
- A 9/80 work schedule
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering and possession of a current registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California are required.
Experience: Three years of professional civil/structural engineering experience in the review of plans and specifications and/or the analysis and design of residential, commercial and industrial buildings is required. Supervisory experience is desirable.
License Or Certificates
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Possession of a valid equivalent is acceptable during the application process.
- Current registration as a civil engineer in the State of California is required.
- Possession of a valid ICC (International Code Council) Plans Examiner Certificate is highly desirable and required within one (1) year of hire date.
- Certification as a California CASp (Certified Access Specialist) is highly desirable.
