Engineer Tech I- (Temporary Signage Installers) are responsible for the installation of temporary signage for space reservations within the public right-of-way. Duties include signage setup and removal, permit compliance, and public interaction to ensure safe and efficient street use.

This position performs semi-skilled tasks focusing on installing temporary signage and managing temporary street use permits. Ensures compliance with city codes and maintains accurate records for enforcement and legal proceedings.

Engineer Tech I’s will perform independent tasks in the field while maintaining a high level of communication with other group members.

About The Division

The Temporary Street Use Permitting (TSUP) office issues around 22,000 permits annually for temporary use of the public right of way. These permits allow applicants to reserve parking, close travel lanes, sidewalks, or streets. Temporary street use permits allow for residential or commercial moves, property maintenance, construction, utility work, loading and unloading passengers or equipment during an event.

Education

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their resume and responses to the supplemental questions how their education, training, and/or experience meets each of the following:

  • Experience responding to customer and/or public inquiries by explaining and interpreting a variety of regulations and procedures. For example, codes, policies, standards, fees, and procedures to the public
  • Experience searching and obtaining information from engineering or architectural documents. For example: drawings, regulations, reports, application forms, property records, specifications and various kinds of maps, graphs and construction plans; gathering, recording and analyzing data to prepare files, documents and recommendations.
  • Experience operating standard office software. For example: Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Experience providing customer service and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work under general supervision and perform detailed work in a time-sensitive and fast-paced environment.
