Job Duties

The PA works as part of the medical provider team, performing a variety of direct primary care services to patients. This includes physical examinations, assessment, diagnosis, treatment plans, medication management, lab review, and/or referrals, including hospitalization when necessary. The PA also monitors the general management plan for assigned patients. The PA performs these functions under the general supervision of a licensed physician.

Obtains complete medical history from patients and/or their family members and performs complete physical examinations, all in consultation with a supervising physician.

Provides health education to patients and their families as appropriate.

Orders routine and diagnostic lab and x-ray studies according to approved protocols.

Diagnoses both acute and chronic illnesses on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and x-ray reports, and/or the results of other diagnostic procedures according to approved protocols.

Prescribes medications as needed according to therapeutic goals. Explains medications and treatment plans to patients and their families.

Formulates, initiates, and monitors management plans for assigned patients using approved protocols and/or consultation with a supervising physician.

Refers patients who require more intensive services to a supervising physician, specialist, or hospital as necessary. Follows up on patients’ progress.

Additional tasks may be assigned as needed to support the business, and responsibilities may evolve to meet the changing needs of the organization.

Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies required. Degree must be from an accredited school whose program is recognized by the state.

License to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Nebraska required. (Or license eligible.)

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Two or more years of clinical experience either preferred or required, depending on clinic location.

Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products required; experience with an Electronic Health Record preferred.

Proficiency in English required.

Proficiency in Spanish either preferred or required, depending on clinic location. If required, must be able to speak enough Spanish to examine Spanish-speaking patients and converse on a basic level.

Demonstrated ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to culturally diverse patients as well as other OWCHC providers and staff members.
