Lead Software Engineer (Java 17)

Position Overview

This is a senior technical leadership role focused exclusively on back-end development — candidates with a primarily front-end or full-stack focus will not be considered. You will serve as a team lead and technical mentor, driving application development, establishing engineering best practices, and leading geographically distributed teams. You will work independently with minimal management oversight, taking ownership of broadly defined assignments from conception through delivery.

Key Contributions & Responsibilities

• Act as team lead for development and support groups; provide programming and technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior developers and team members.
• Lead development of new functionality and applications on cross-functional teams; drive feature delivery focused on measurable business value.
• Work independently on complex systems and infrastructure components; identify and resolve complex application and technical problems, including off-shift and weekend support calls.
• Maintain high standards of software quality by establishing good engineering practices and habits; identify and encourage areas for team growth and improvement.
• Communicate with end users and internal customers to direct development, debugging, and testing of application software for accuracy, integrity, interoperability, and completeness.
• Perform integration testing and customer acceptance testing requiring careful planning and execution; participate in technology evaluation and recommendations.
• Apply an enterprise-wide view to solutions; support adoption of standards and practices and promote reuse across the organization.
• Perform production support triage, coordinating incident resolution and stakeholder communication.

Team Structure & Work Environment

You will lead and collaborate with geographically distributed engineering teams, working across time zones with both internal and external stakeholders from various business units. This is a hybrid role requiring 2 days on-site per week in Chicago, IL. Candidates must currently reside in the local Chicago area — candidates outside the area will not be considered at this time.

Requirements

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field required.
• 10+ years of experience designing and developing software applications in Java.
• Minimum 3+ years of experience leading geographically distributed teams.

Required Technical Skills

• Strong Java 17 back-end development expertise — back-end focus is a strict requirement for this role.
• RESTful web services design and implementation.
• AWS knowledge including IAM, Kinesis, DynamoDB, API Gateway stack, SQS, SNS, and KMS.
• PostgreSQL or equivalent relational database experience.
• DevOps practices and tooling experience; experience designing for high availability and reliability.
• Some software architecture experience, with the ability to apply an enterprise-wide perspective to design decisions.

Desired Technical Skills

• Python development experience.
