Pay rate: $20/hour
Job Location: On-site with some virtual hours available
About the Center: Since 1992, the non-profit Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning has been meeting the educational and artistic needs of Lexington, Kentucky. Located in a former Carnegie Library building, the center seeks “to empower people to explore and express their voices” through writing, reading, and the arts. The Center serves thousands of Kentuckians annually with classes for lifelong learners; unique tutoring and mentoring programs; accessible community space, and other imaginative learning opportunities.
Overall position responsibilities: The Math Specialist provides one-on-one tutoring for high school math students, usually in Alegra 1 and 2, Geometry, and Calculus. This position reports directly to the Tutoring Director. The Math Specialist must provide availability three nights a week from Monday to Friday. At least one night a week must be in person. In-person tutoring hours are typically 3:30pm-7:30pm. Virtual tutoring hours are flexible and can also take place on the weekend if needed.
Primary duties
· Provide one hour a week of individual tutoring with high school math students as assigned.
· Communicate with the students and their families to assess needs and to confirm and/or reschedule tutoring sessions as needed.
· Create lesson plans to meet the individual needs of each student.
· Maintain regular communication with the Tutoring Director and collaborate to address tutoring-related issues as they arise.
Position Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred.
· Must have experience teaching/tutoring with a strong background in upper-level math.
· Must have strong organizational skills, as well as both written and verbal communication skills.
· Must be 18 years or older and pass a background check.
