Baytown Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Guided by the vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, Baytown Habitat works alongside families, volunteers, donors, and community partners to provide affordable homeownership opportunities and advocate for safe, decent housing.

Position Summary

The Board of Directors provides governance, strategic leadership, and fiduciary oversight for Baytown Habitat for Humanity. Board Members serve as ambassadors of the organization, helping advance its mission through leadership, advocacy, fundraising, community engagement, and stewardship.

This is an unpaid volunteer leadership position based in Baytown, Texas. Board Members play a critical role in ensuring the long-term sustainability and impact of the organization while helping local families achieve the dream of homeownership.

Key ResponsibilitiesGovernance & Leadership

  • Support and uphold the mission, vision, and core values of Baytown Habitat for Humanity.
  • Provide strategic guidance and organizational leadership.
  • Establish and review policies that support effective operations and mission fulfillment.
  • Ensure compliance with bylaws, legal requirements, and ethical standards.
  • Act in the best interests of the organization at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest.

Advocacy & Community Engagement

  • Serve as an ambassador for Baytown Habitat within the community.
  • Advocate for affordable housing and community development initiatives.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with community leaders, businesses, churches, and partner organizations.
  • Promote awareness of Habitat's programs and impact.

Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Support fundraising efforts and donor engagement activities.
  • Assist with cultivating relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners.
  • Participate in fundraising campaigns, special events, and community outreach opportunities.
  • Make a personal financial contribution annually at a level meaningful to the individual member.

Committee Leadership

  • Chair one standing committee and actively participate in committee work.
  • Conduct monthly committee meetings.
  • Submit a detailed committee report no later than one week following each committee meeting.
  • Support committee goals and organizational priorities.

Board Service Expectations

Board Members are expected to:

  • Serve a two-year term and may serve up to three consecutive terms.
  • Attend and actively participate in all regularly scheduled board meetings.
  • Miss no more than three board meetings annually.
  • Review meeting materials and come prepared for discussions and decisions.
  • Attend board training and development opportunities.
  • Participate in at least two fundraising or community engagement events each year.
  • Help recruit and develop a strong, diverse, mission-focused board.
  • Support a culture of collaboration, accountability, and servant leadership.

Board Committees

Board Members will serve on and/or chair one of the following committees:

  1. Construction Committee
  2. Finance Committee
  3. Homeowner Support & Selection Committee
  4. Governance Committee
  5. Marketing Committee
  6. Development Committee

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership, governance, or strategic planning experience.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit organizations, fundraising, donor relations, or community engagement.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to affordable housing and community development.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Professional experience in fields such as law, finance, human resources, education, marketing, construction, community development, or business leadership is highly valued.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
