The Role
BuildGreenCT is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization’s operations and grow membership. This role is responsible for aligning people, programs, and resources to ensure consistent program delivery, strong financial management, and long-term organizational sustainability.
Working in close partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads day-to-day operations while supporting strategic planning, governance, and external relationships.

Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Operations
- Lead day-to-day operations, ensuring alignment across staff, volunteers, consultants, and board leadership
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and values-aligned culture
- Supervise staff and ensure continuity across transitions and volunteer leadership changes
- Ensure core organizational processes, systems, and workflows are documented and consistently followed
- The current executive director will be available for onboarding and technical support.
Operations, Systems & Data Security Oversight
- Oversee the organization’s digital operational systems and data, ensuring reliability, appropriate safeguards, and continuity
- Ensure secure management of accounts, user access, and credentials, including implementation of basic security practices (e.g., multi-factor authentication)
- Ensure platforms (e.g., Google Workspace, Salesforce, Stripe, Eventbrite, Mailchimp, QuickBooks, Zoom) are maintained, with appropriate access controls and timely license/subscription management
- Maintain readiness to respond to operational or security incidents, including data loss, account compromise, or service disruption
- Ensure organizational assets, materials, and equipment are properly tracked and secured
Financial Management & Oversight
- Support development and oversight of the annual operating budget and program budgets in collaboration with the Treasurer and Finance Committee
- Ensure strong financial controls, transparency, and compliance with nonprofit best practices
- Oversee financial operations, including coordination with bookkeeping support, contract management, and grant compliance
Strategy & Partnerships
- Support the Board in implementing strategic plans and translating priorities into annual goals and work plans
- Identify, cultivate, and steward strategic partnerships that expand organizational impact and sustainability
- Monitor performance and recommend adjustments based on emerging opportunities, risks, and trends
Board & Governance Support
- Serve as primary liaison to the Board, supporting meeting planning, reporting, and decision-making
- Ensure compliance with legal, financial, and organizational requirements (e.g., Form 990, insurance, state filings)
- Support board development, onboarding, and governance best practices
Programs & Community Engagement
- Oversee delivery of high-quality programs and events aligned with mission and strategy
- Ensure coordination across program planning, marketing, and partnerships to maximize participation and impact
- Ensure program performance is tracked and evaluated, including preparation of annual impact reporting
Communications & Development
- Oversee communications and marketing strategy in collaboration with consultants
- Support revenue generation through membership, sponsorships, fundraising campaigns, and grants
- Serve as a high-level steward for key relationships, including members, sponsors, and partners
Qualifications
- 5+ years of leadership or management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization
- Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, financial reporting, and oversight
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with boards, volunteers, and diverse stakeholders
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Experience with fundraising, sponsorship development, or grant management
- Familiarity with sustainability, green building, or related fields
- Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software and operational systems (Salesforce CRM a plus)
Position Details
- Fulltime, salaried, exempt position - 30 hours per week (full organizational leadership scope)
- Salary range of $62,400 to $67,100 based on experience with two weeks per year of personal time off and a computer/cell phone stipend of $150 per month
- Amenable to negotiating an hourly independent contractor arrangement (25–30 hours/week) based on candidate preference
- Hybrid, with ability to frequently attend in-person meetings, programs, and events in Connecticut
