Sr. Scrum Master

The Scrum Master acts as a servant leader for the Agile team, facilitating Scrum ceremonies, removing obstacles, and guiding the team towards self-organization and high performance. This position is responsible for managing resistance to Agile methodologies within the team, resolving conflicts and dysfunctions, and fostering psychological safety and collaboration.
The Scrum Master collaborates closely with the Agile Coach and Product Owner to ensure the team functions effectively within Agile principles while consistently delivering predictable value. While working independently with the team on daily execution, this role follows the organization’s Agile playbook, standards, and directives from the Agile Program Manager. The position demands the ability to navigate organizational complexities, protect the team from external disruptions, and promote a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
Requirements
Proven knowledge and experience
- A minimum of seven (7) years of practical experience as a Scrum Master supporting multiple teams within complex, matrixed organizations. Certification as a Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM II or above) is mandatory;
- Advanced certifications such as Certified Scrum Professional or SAFe Scrum Master are highly desirable.
- Demonstrated success in building self-organizing teams, overcoming resistance to Agile implementation, and driving quantifiable improvements in team velocity and predictability.
- Proven skills in managing team conflicts, fostering psychological safety, and leading teams through cultural and mindset transformations.
- Excellent facilitation, conflict resolution, change management, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Experience operating within established organizational frameworks while coaching teams toward Agile maturity.
- Experience in government sectors or highly regulated industries is preferred.
The SM will support and contribute to the delivery of the following:
- Team Self-Organization & Accountability: Foster self-organizing, empowered teams that take ownership of their commitments and uphold accountability for sprint goals and deliverables.
- Impediment Removal & Escalation: Promptly identify and remove obstacles at the team level, escalate organizational or systemic issues to the relevant leadership, and ensure transparent tracking and resolution of all impediments.
- Continuous Improvement Culture: Facilitate effective retrospectives that lead to actionable results, implement improvements based on team feedback, and promote a culture of experimentation and ongoing learning.

Work will be conducted on-site in Washington DC.
