Pay Range Information
Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.
Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
Coordinate an academic environmental geochemistry lab, facilitate and conduct independent research. Conducting research will be an integral part of the position. The position will assist and supervise undergraduate students with their projects and pursuit of their own research. The research will involve BET surface area analysis of sediments and soils, synchrotron-based experimental data acquisition and processing. Lab-based and field-based experimental design, sampling and processing. Position will coordinate lab operations including but not limited to organizing lab schedule, group meetings, supply inventory and other administrative tasks as assigned.
Responsibilities
Conduct independent research in environmental geochemistry related to supervisor's principal research. Duties include but are not limited to:
- BET surface area analysis of sediments and soils
- Synchrotron-based experimental data acquisition and processing Lab-based experimental design and sampling
- Field-based sampling and sample processing
- Training and advising of new undergraduate research students
- Literature search, reading, summarizing and integrating into scientific manuscripts
- Coordinate the beam time runs at Stanford: prepping samples in thin section, arranging all travel and lodging options, assisting with data collection, efforts, coordinating data, analysis, and fitting, preparing figures and text for presentation and publication
- Drafting, sighting, editing, and preparing for submission of scientific manuscripts to top-tier peer-reviewed journals
- Coordinating recruiting events for the Lab (faculty research expo, Lab open house)
- Coordinating lab safety requirements, lab member safety training, instrument training, and compliance
- Coordinate temporary lab guests (Chapman students and other labs, community college students, high school students)
Oversee general lab operations. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Organizing lab schedule, group meetings; disseminating notes from group meetings
- Coordinate ordering, receiving, and tracking lab materials and inventory
- Processing P-card monthly reports, assembling and tracking receipts, assigning charges to appropriate accounts
- Making travel arrangements for research/conferences, processing travel expense reports
- Other administrative tasks associated with research
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Strong basic wet chemistry skills, including the use of a pH meter, autopipet, centrifuge, analytical balance and stir plate.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and/or Kaleidagraph, specifically with respect to generating scientific graphs
- Completed courses in general chemistry
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and maintain a safe working environment.
- Writing skills to summarize research findings and integrate into scientific manuscripts
- Communication and interpersonal skills to interact and work collaboratively with other researchers
Desired Qualifications
- Completed courses in physical geology
- Willingness to acquire new skills
- A Bachelor's degree with research laboratory experience in an appropriate field with preference given to candidates with a degree in chemistry, geology, biochemistry or related field.
