Responsible for the hiring, training, evaluation, and supervision of the Child Life Specialists. Facilitates the day to day management and coordination of the department and supports/advocates for improvements to the Child Life department.Manages the budget and expense requests for department. Assists the Child Life, nursing, and medical staff in providing psychosocial and emotional support to pediatric patients through the use of therapeutic play, which helps children to express their feelings. The department also enables the patient and family to understand the child's illness and overall hospital procedures

Qualifications

Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Child Development, Psychology or closely related field, Master's degree preferred, and three to five years of previous work related experience required. Child Life internship required. Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) certification required. BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required at time of hire or within 6 months of hire. Work requires the analytical ability to resolve complex problems requiring the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in-depth, experienced-based knowledge. Work requires the ability to educate patients and their families or perform other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skill.

Effective January 2019, St. Joseph’s Health requires all employee certifications for Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to be granted through the American Heart Association.
