The Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition diagnoses and treats patients with digestive problems and conditions. Our specialists use innovative diagnostic tools and treatments such as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for esophageal, stomach and duodenal disorders, endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration, ablative techniques for Barrett’s esophagus, colonoscopies, and therapeutic interventions for colonic disease. By joining the GI team as a RN, you will assist fellow caregivers in providing exceptional care, from initial introduction to final send-off. In this role, you will interact directly with patients, families and visitors, offering the opportunity to enhance their experience and provide important medical information as needed. You will also provide critical onboarding, mentoring and competency support for new clinical caregivers as a Nightingale, strengthening overall team performance. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic system provides nurses with many professional development resources, including furthering education and online/in-person courses to enhance your skills.

A PRN caregiver in this position works varying days from 8:00AM – 4:30PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Assess health status by completing a nursing assessment.
  • Perform telephone triage.
  • Notify physicians/LIPs of abnormal findings.
  • Establish a care plan in collaboration with the patient, family and health care team.
  • Collaborate with care coordinators to ensure smooth and effective transitions of care.
  • Assist with specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Administer medications and treatments as ordered by physician/LIP and monitor patients for response.
  • Initiate CPR and other emergency measures.
  • Cover other nursing roles within the department.
  • Develop, evaluate, adapt and document education to learning needs.
  • Provide health education to patients and families.
  • Participate in quality initiatives, process improvements and research activities to improve patient outcomes, patient experience and patient safety.
  • Maintain professional growth and development in the nursing field and identify annual core competencies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing (Diploma, ADN or BSN program)
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Three years of experience in an RN Ambulatory position at the Cleveland Clinic immediately prior to retirement
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements

  • Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • May require some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
  • Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
  • Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
