Organization Description

The Center for Sustainable Infrastructure (CSI) is a Pacific Northwest non-profit organization dedicated to building a thriving future for northwest communities through sustainable, multi-benefit solutions to infrastructure challenges. CSI and its partners work with PNW communities and experts in Industrial Symbiosis to implement durable, symbiotic solutions to inherently expensive and often disruptive infrastructure challenges. These sustainable solutions increase the value of taxpayer and private sector investments while reducing the impact of these large-scale projects on our environment and local communities.

Role Description

  • Reporting to the Executive Director, CSI’s new Communications Director will be part of an enthusiastic, tight-knit team of staff, board members, contractors, and government and private-sector partners.
  • The Communications Director will be responsible for all communications about and from CSI with the goal of positioning CSI as the go-to source of information about sustainable infrastructure and industrial symbiosis principles and goals.
  • They will help communicate the concepts of CSI’s work to policymakers, community economic development leaders, ports, utilities, local governments, industry representatives, business owners, and others
  • The Communications Director will be an educator/evangelist for the key principles of sustainable infrastructure and industrial symbiosis.
  • They will help CSI and its partners tell the stories of communities implementing sustainable, symbiotic approaches to often vexing industrial-scale projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the development and dissemination of all external information from CSI

  • Content for key social media platforms
  • Maintenance and timely updates to the CSI website
  • Educational information for key audiences
  • Speeches and/or talking points for CSI staff and/or partners, and advocates
  • Materials for conferences, media tours, etc.
  • News releases, articles for traditional and new media outlets

Will work with CSI contractors and partners to develop collateral materials and products that supplement and/or complement the above standard communications products

Responsible for developing and implementing a broad communications strategy that will help guide the expansion of CSI’s impact throughout the Pacific Northwest over the next five years

Responsible for maintaining and expanding CSI's contacts among regional, national, and international audiences and partners

Qualifications

We are a small but mighty team so the successful candidate will be a joy to work with.

In addition, the successful candidate must have:

  • At least a B.A. or B.S.
  • At least five years of experience managing a proactive communications operation using the full array of modern communications tools
  • A strong understanding of the inner workings of local, state, and federal governments
  • Ability to also communicate well with industry stakeholders
  • Demonstrably strong verbal and writing/editing skills; Writing samples will be requested
  • Experience translating and communicating technical issues to broad audiences
  • An entrepreneurial spirit – a self-starter anxious to build and enterprise stories about our work or that of our partners
  • A tendency to be an extrovert with strong skills at building personal relationships

Ideally, the candidate will also have:

  • Previous management experience
  • Significant experience working with traditional media
  • Experience and understanding of new media platforms (podcasts, video, social media and digital marketing, etc.)
  • Specific familiarity with MailChimp, LinkedIn, Canva, Wix, and Microsoft/Adobe products

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary range: $95,000--$110,000
  • Benefits: Health/Dental/Vision + 401K with 6% employer match
  • PTO: 4 weeks of paid vacation + paid holidays and sick time
  • Location: Olympia, Washington
  • Remote work: in-person is preferred, hybrid is negotiable
