Assistant Managing Director

The Assistant Managing Director serves as a strategic and operational partner to the Managing Director, playing a critical role in advancing the theatre’s mission through the alignment of strategy, execution, and relationships. Operating at the intersection of leadership, cross-departmental coordination, and external engagement, this role helps translate organizational priorities into action while identifying opportunities that support long-term sustainability and growth.
This position combines high-level executive support, strategic initiative leadership, and relationship stewardship. The Assistant Managing Director is a trusted thought partner who contributes to decision-making, anticipates needs, synthesizes information across the organization, and ensures that leadership time, resources, and attention are aligned with the theatre’s highest priorities.
The role requires exceptional judgment, discretion, and agility, as well as the ability to move seamlessly between strategic thinking and operational execution. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, strong analytical thinking, and the ability to build meaningful relationships internally and externally with warmth and enthusiasm while championing Everyman Theatre’s values of people, community, and excellence.
This role is designed as a leadership pathway position, with opportunities to expand scope, autonomy, and strategic influence over time based on performance and organizational needs. The Assistant Managing Director will gain increasing ownership of institutional initiatives and external relationships, positioning them for continued growth and increased strategic responsibility.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Partnership & Leadership Support
- Serve as a trusted thought partner to the Managing Director, providing insight, analysis, and recommendations on organizational priorities, risks, and opportunities
- Synthesize information across departments and participants to support informed decision-making and strategic alignment
- Assist in translating organizational strategy into actionable plans, ensuring execution aligns with institutional goals and values
- Ensure the Managing Director and Artistic Director’s time is strategically aligned with the organization’s highest priorities
Initiative Ownership & Cross-Departmental Leadership
- Lead and support cross-departmental initiatives from concept through execution, ensuring alignment, accountability, and measurable outcomes
- Support and drive strategic initiatives including (but not limited to) Resiliency Planning, CARES (Committee on Anti-Racism, Equity, and Solidarity) initiatives, capital projects, campaign planning and execution, systems integration, and organizational stability and growth efforts
- Facilitate alignment by coordinating stakeholders, resolving competing priorities, and ensuring follow-through across departments
- Identify connections between organizational challenges, emerging opportunities, and strategic goals, and proactively advance solutions
External Relationships & Strategic Engagement
- Cultivate, steward, and strategically leverage relationships with Board members, donors, patrons, community partners, business leaders, government representatives, and civic leaders
- Represent Everyman Theatre in external settings, including networking events, performances, local and regional cultural programs, and community engagements
- Translate external relationships and conversations into opportunities that advance institutional priorities, partnerships, and funding strategies
- Support organizational advocacy efforts, including maintaining awareness of and engagement with local, regional, and state government stakeholders to effectively advocate for Everyman, Downtown, and the arts
Board Relations & Governance
- Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors, ensuring effective communication, organization, and engagement
- Coordinate all Board and Committee meetings, including preparing materials, managing logistics, and taking and distributing notes and action items
- Maintain official Board records, including meeting minutes, bylaws, resolutions, and membership data
- Support Board development efforts, including research on prospective members and identifying representation gaps
Patron Advancement & Institutional Growth
- Partner with leadership, marketing, philanthropy, and education teams to support and strengthen comprehensive patron advancement strategies, including planning, tracking, research, cultivation, and stewardship
- Contribute to the development and execution of cross-departmental strategies that build brand loyalty, deepen relationships, and foster a culture of philanthropy
Executive Operations & Communication
- Manage the calendars of the Managing Director and Artistic Director, ensuring effective prioritization and alignment with strategic goals
- Prepare high-level briefings for meetings and events, including background research, stakeholder insights, and strategic talking points
- Draft and edit internal and external communications in support of leadership priorities
- Coordinate cross-departmental meetings and ensure effective communication flow across the organization
- Record meeting notes and action items, distribute, and follow up as needed to ensure accountability
- Support the preparation and analysis of financial forecasting to achieve organizational alignment toward the multi-year financial plan
Organizational Integration & Culture
- Maintain a deep understanding of all departments to effectively support internal communication and collaboration
- Support institution-wide engagement with strategic priorities and initiatives, ensuring alignment across the organization
- Model and champion a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence

ABOUT THE POSITION
- The Assistant Managing Director is a full-time exempt position with a starting salary of $68,000 with flexibility based on experience and qualifications.
- Everyman Theatre provides 100% medical coverage for medical, dental, vision, and life insurance including both full premium coverage and full deductible coverage.
