Farm Employee
Carolina Farm Stewardship Association
About The Farm
Perry-winkle Farm grows a diverse mix of vegetable and cut flower crops in northern Chatham County, NC. We have been “growing flowers and food for our neighbors” since 1991 and are looking forward to our 36th season. Our vegetable production includes an emphasis on specialty potatoes, salad greens and peppers. We grow three seasons of cut flowers for mixed bouquet sales at market, for on-farm design work, and bulk bucket flowers for DIY weddings and other special events. The farm is located in central North Carolina, just 10 miles from Carrboro/Chapel Hill (home of UNC-CH); and we are 12 miles from Pittsboro (site of the Central Carolina Community College’s Sustainable Farming Program).
We are looking for 1 or 2 part-time employees for immediate start this season, to help with all aspects of our farm work. Activities will include greenhouse work, transplanting, weeding, and harvesting crops, and prepping products for market. There will be opportunities to learn the many aspects of our production systems including the setting up and maintaining a drip irrigation system, our approach to soil fertility, crop rotations, cover crop planning and utilization, and marketing direct to the consumers.
Qualifications: Experience is not required, but we are looking for dependable employees with strong bodies, healthy work ethics and for folks who possess the ability to “play well with others.” Applicants need to understand that we are production farmers who work in all kinds of weather (both hot and cold) and that we need to tackle all tasks with positive attitudes and with a sense of “urgency” because there are always more jobs needing to be done.
Compensation: $16 – $18 per hour. We work 8 hour days which includes a 1/2 hour paid lunch break.
Application Instructions: Email Cathy at ***email_hidden***. Include your reasons for wanting to work on our farm and the contact information for 2 references.
